Caffeine attenuates paradoxical sleep deprivation induced- memory impairment during paradoxical sleep windows in rats

چکیده مقاله:
There is considerable evidence to support the hypothesis of relationship between paradoxical sleep (PS) and learning–memory processing. It has been suggested that PS is important in memory retention at the specific time course called PS windows (PSW). The time of PSWs occurrence and duration of these PSWs following the training sessions and, the neurochemical nature of PSWs has not been well known. In this research the duration of PSWs and the effect of caffeine on memory retention in these periods has been investigated. For this purpose, male NMRI rats were trained in a two–way shuttle avoidance task (100 trials in one session) and their memory retention was tested one week after learning. In experiment 1, the baseline EEG and EMG activity 1-4 hr after training was recorded. In those animals that reached to 70% learning criteria (learner group), the total duration of PS increased significantly (P

Aerobic exercise attenuates inhibitory avoidance memory deficit induced by paradoxical sleep deprivation in rats
The deleterious effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation (SD) on memory processes are well documented. Physical exercise improves many aspects of brain functions and induces neuroprotection. In the present study, we investigated the influence of 4 weeks of treadmill aerobic exercise on both long-term memory and the expression of synaptic proteins (GAP-43, synapsin I, synaptophysin, and PSD-95) ...
متن کاملParadoxical sleep deprivation increases plasma endothelin levels.
The endothelins (ET-1, 2 and 3) constitute a family of 21 amino acid peptides with potent biological activities. ET-1 is one of the most potent endogenous vasoconstrictors so far identified and its increased concentration in plasma appears to be closely related to the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension as well as to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA patients exhibit repetitive episodes of a...
متن کاملEffects of cocaine, methamphetamine and modafinil challenge on sleep rebound after paradoxical sleep deprivation in rats.
Sleep loss is both common and critically relevant to our society and might lead to the abuse of psychostimulants such as amphetamines, cocaine and modafinil. Since psychoactive substance abuse often occurs within a scenario of sleep deficit, the purpose of this investigation was to compare the sleep patterns of rats challenged with cocaine (7 mg/kg, ip), methamphetamine (7 mg/kg, ip), or modafi...
متن کاملInfluence of paradoxical sleep deprivation and sleep recovery on testosterone level in rats of different ages.
This study was performed to assess serum testosterone alterations induced by paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) and to verify their attenuation during sleep recovery (SR) based on different durations and ages. Wistar male rats aged 12 weeks for the younger group and 20 weeks for the elder group were randomly distributed into one of the following groups: a control group (cage and platform), 3-d...
متن کاملIntra-cerebroventricular Administration of Crocin Attenuates Sleep Deprivation-induced Hyperalgesia in Rats
Introduction: Sleep deprivation can cause hyperalgesia and interfere with analgesic treatments. The aim of the present study was to establish an obligatory sleep-abstinence model and also evaluate the effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of crocin on pain perception in Wistar rats. Methods: In this experimental study, 35 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups ...
