Antimalarial activities of Breynia Nivosa
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Background & Aim: Antiplasmodial activity of leaf extract of Breynia nivosa was evaluated to ascertain the folkloric claim of its antimalarial activity. Experimental: The crude leaf extract (75 – 225 mg/kg), of Breynia nivosa was investigated for antiplasmodial activity against chloroquine sensitive Plasmodium berghei infections in mice. The antiplasmodial activity during early and established infections as well as prophylactic were investigated. Artesunate 5 mg/kg and pyrimethamine 1.2 mg/kg were used as positive controls. Thin films made from tail blood of each mouse were used to assess the level of parasitaemia of the mice. Results & Discussion: The extract dose-dependently reduced parasitaemia induced by chloroquine sensitive Plasmodium berghei infection in prophylactic, suppressive and curative models in mice. These reductions were statistically significant (p<0.001). They also improved the mean survival time (MST) from 11 to 27 days relative to control control (p Industrial and practical recommendations: The plant, Breynia nivosa, possesses antimalarial property which can be exploited in the treatment of malaria.

متن کاملAntimalarial activities of aminooxy compounds.
Twenty-three aminooxy compounds have been examined for their ability to inhibit the growth of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in vitro. Eight of these compounds were found to have 50% inhibitory concentrations less than 10 microM, with the best drugs being canaline (the aminooxy analogue of ornithine) and CGP51905A at 297 +/- 23.6 nM and 242 +/- 18.8 nM, respectively. Canaline was al...
متن کاملAntimalarial activities of dermaseptin S4 derivatives.
The hemolytic antimicrobial peptide dermaseptin S4 was recently shown to exert antimalarial activity. In this study, we attempted to understand the underlying mechanism(s) and identify derivatives with improved antimalarial activity. A number of dermaseptin S4 derivatives inhibited parasite growth with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) in the micromolar range. Among these, the substituted...
متن کاملPlants as sources of antimalarial drugs: in vitro antimalarial activities of some quassinoids.
Fourteen quassinoids, obtained from simaroubaceous plants, were tested for in vitro antimalarial activity. All of these inhibited the incorporation of [3H]hypoxanthine into Plasmodium falciparum in vitro at concentrations below 0.41 microgram ml-1. The two most potent quassinoids, bruceantin and simalikalactone D, showed 50% inhibitory concentration values of 0.0008 and 0.0009 microgram ml-1, r...

Objective(s):Astrodaucus persicus (Apiaceae) is one of the two species of this genus which grows in different parts of Iran. Roots of this plant were rich in benzodioxoles and used as food additive or salad in Iran and near countries. The aim of present study was evaluation of antimalarial and cytotoxic effects of different fractions of A. persicus fruits and roots extracts. Materials and Metho...
