Alluvial fan facies of the Qazvin Plain: paleoclimate and tectonic implications during Quaternary
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
The present research focuses on a detailed facies description and interpretation of five alluvial fans of the Qazvin Plain. Beside the tectonic activity that leads to the localization of the fans on the northern margin of the Qazvin Plain, the climate has a significant role in the occurrence of their facies. The alluvial fans are divided into three facies groups: group 1, group 2, and group 3. Alluvial fan 1 is dominated by the episodic matrix to clast-supported gravel, interbedded with a subordinate, and red matrix-supported gravel deposited by non-cohesive debris flow. Groups 2 and 3 are characterized by deposits of debris flow, mud-rich debris flows, channelized, non-cohesive debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows, and sheet floods. The hallmark of fan 3 is disorganized, very poorly sorted gravel, lack of erosional bases, and a wide particle-size range from clay to outsized-boulders. The facies interpreted as a result of debris flow following episodic localized tectonic activity of the Kavendaj Fault along the fan head during Quaternary. Relatively insignificant changes of the sedimentary facies of the studied fans from debris-flows to sheet floods during the accumulation of the three groups are attributed to a slight variation of climatic conditions, source rocks, and tectonic activity.

Source area and tectonic control on alluvial-fan development in the Miocene Fohnsdorf intramontane basin, Austria
Middle Miocene alluvial fans in the intramontane Fohnsdorf Basin of the Eastern Alps originated along normal faults and linked strike-slip faults in a continental half-graben setting. The fans display considerable facies differences. Debris flows of the Rachau fan are characterized by a sandy matrix and large boulders, whereas debris flows of the Apfelberg fan are characterized by higher silt a...

abstract alluvial fans are the most striking phenomena o fluvial geomorphology . these forms are found in frount of mountains and pediments of arid and semiarid zones . alluvial fans are affected by climate changes and tectonics . occurring of tectonic events lead to reaction of alluvial fans . some of these reactions appear on dissection of alluvial fans and displacement of depocenters on allu...

Introduction Pre-Quaternary paleoclimate modeling is the science of simulating climate change over the earliest 99.9% of Earth’s history using numerical models of the climate system. The record of pre-Quaternary climate documents enormous climate swings with global ice-covered and ice-free end members. A number of climate factors shaped Quaternary and pre-Quaternary paleoclimate on timescales r...

متن کاملCorrelation and dating of Quaternary alluvial-fan surfaces using scarp diffusion
Great interest has recently been focused on dating and interpreting alluvial-fan surfaces. As a complement to the radiometric methods often used for surface-exposure dating, this paper illustrates a rapid method for correlating and dating fan surfaces using the cross-sectional shape of gullies incised into fan surfaces. The method applies a linear hillslope-diffusion model to invert for the dif...
