Voltage increase of aqueous lithium-ion batteries by Li-ion conducting Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 glass-ceramic

author

Abstract:

In this research, a lithium ion conducting lithium aluminum germanium phosphate (LAGP) glass-ceramic with a formula of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 was synthesized by melt-quenching method and subsequent crystallization at 850 °C for 8 h. The prepared glass-ceramic was characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The XRD patterns exhibited the existence of LiGe2(PO4)3 as the dominant phase with a little impurity phase of GeO2. SEM images revealed the presence of large cubic LAGP grains. Also, the prepared glass-ceramic was used as protective membrane in aqueous lithium ion batteries for their voltage increase. The prepared batteries with graphite as anode, LiMn2O4 as cathode and saturated aqueous solution of lithium nitrate as the electrolyte with assistance of protective membrane exhibited discharge voltage of 3.64 V and discharge capacity of 117 mAh g-1, which are comparable with those in organic-based lithium ion batteries.

High-Voltage Aqueous Magnesium Ion Batteries

Nonaqueous rechargeable magnesium (Mg) batteries suffer from the complicated and moisture-sensitive electrolyte chemistry. Besides electrolytes, the practicality of a Mg battery is also confined by the absence of high-performance electrode materials due to the intrinsically slow Mg2+ diffusion in the solids. In this work, we demonstrated a rechargeable aqueous magnesium ion battery (AMIB) conce...

Homogeneity of lithium distribution in cylinder-type Li-ion batteries

Spatially-resolved neutron powder diffraction with a gauge volume of 2 × 2 × 20 mm(3) has been applied as an in situ method to probe the lithium concentration in the graphite anode of different Li-ion cells of 18650-type in charged state. Structural studies performed in combination with electrochemical measurements and X-ray computed tomography under real cell operating conditions unambiguously...

Oxidation processes on conducting carbon additives for lithium-ion batteries

The oxidation processes at the interface between different types of typical carbon additives for lithium-ion batteries and carbonates electrolyte above 5 V versus Li/Li were investigated. Depending on the nature and surface area of the carbon additive, the irreversible capacity during galvanostatic cycling between 2.75 and 5.25 V versus Li/Li could be as high as 700 mAh g (of carbon). In the po...

Compliant glass-polymer hybrid single ion-conducting electrolytes for lithium batteries.

Despite high ionic conductivities, current inorganic solid electrolytes cannot be used in lithium batteries because of a lack of compliance and adhesion to active particles in battery electrodes as they are discharged and charged. We have successfully developed a compliant, nonflammable, hybrid single ion-conducting electrolyte comprising inorganic sulfide glass particles covalently bonded to a...

Transparent lithium-ion batteries.

Transparent devices have recently attracted substantial attention. Various applications have been demonstrated, including displays, touch screens, and solar cells; however, transparent batteries, a key component in fully integrated transparent devices, have not yet been reported. As battery electrode materials are not transparent and have to be thick enough to store energy, the traditional appr...
