Abstract:

Background: The effects of vitamin D in skeletal system, biological metabolism and immune system function are well shown. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) are two major types of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is widely in human population and vitamin D intoxication is very rare. Case Description: The patient is 37-years old bodybuilder man who referred to emergency room with acute hypertension and headache without any medical history. In the laboratory examination, elevation in calcium and serum creatinine level were observed, but there were no specific signs and symptoms of renal failure. After investigation, vitamin D intoxication was confirmed and it was due to excessive intake of vitamin D supplements. Discussion and conclusion: The vitamin D3 is involved in calcium hemostasis. The effect of acute hypercalcemia on blood pressure was established.  Hypercalcemia can cause an elevation in blood pressure, and renal failure may predispose to hypertensive response. Often clinical symptoms associated to vitamin D intoxication is related to acute renal failure (ARF). Hypertension without ARF symptom can emphasis on the relationship between acute hypercalcemia and hypertension.

Vitamin D intoxication.

Vitamin D intoxication (VDI) may result from supplementation rarely, but it has been reported more frequently in recent years. This may be attributable to an increase in vitamin D supplement intake due to an understanding of the role of vitamin D (25OHD) in the pathogenesis of several diseases. The symptoms and findings associated with VDI are closely related to serum calcium concentration and ...

Vitamin D intoxication: case report

Hypervitaminosis D is a rarely reported condition. In general it is only perceived when hypercalcemia is not resolved. The use of vitamin D has increased in recent years because of its benefits, but as a result, intoxication cases have occurred more frequently. This report describes a patient who presented worsening of renal function and hypercalcemia. After investigation, vitamin D intoxicatio...

Vitamin D3 influence the Th1/Th2 ratio in C57BL/6 induced model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

Objective(s): Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is known as a progressive inflammatory CNS disease. Cytokines belong to Th1 or Th2 family and inflammatory cells, play significant role in pathophysiology of MS. Thus, any treatment supposed to influence the relation between Th1 to Th2 cytokines expression. Although vitamin D has been prescribed as a therapeutic supplement of MS for a long time, it is not c...

Vitamin D3 and brain development.

Evidence for the presence of the vitamin D receptor in brain implies this vitamin may have some function in this organ. This study investigates whether vitamin D(3) acts during brain development. We demonstrate that rats born to vitamin D(3)-deficient mothers had profound alterations in the brain at birth. The cortex was longer but not wider, the lateral ventricles were enlarged, the cortex was...

Potential Role of Vitamin D3 Compared with Rho-Kinase Inhibitor (Fasudil) on L-NAME – Induced Hypertension in Rabbits

Cardiovascular function is mainly controlled by the reninangiotensin system, which affects blood vessel tone. Inappropriate activation of the renin-angiotensin system can lead to hypertension. In light of emerging evidence of a widespread global problem of vitamin D deficiency, there has been increasing interest concerning the role of vitamin D in hypertension. Little attention has been paid to...

25-Hydroxylation of vitamin D3: relation to circulating vitamin D3 under various input conditions.

BACKGROUND Neither the efficiency of the 25-hydroxylation of vitamin D nor the steady state relation between vitamin D(3) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] has been studied in humans. OBJECTIVE We aimed to examine the relation between serum vitamin D(3) and 25(OH)D in normal subjects after either oral administration of vitamin D(3) or ultraviolet-B radiation across a broad range of inputs. ...
