Visual Pattern Image Coding by a Morphological Approach (RESEARCH NOTE)
Authors
Abstract:
This paper presents an improvement of the Visual Pattern image coding (VPIC) scheme presented by Chen and Bovik in [2] and [3]. The patterns in this improved scheme are defined by morphological operations and classified by absolute error minimization. The improved scheme identifies more uniform blocks and reduces the noise effect. Therefore, it improves the compression ratio and image quality is steel preserved. To achieve a better compression ratio, a hierarchical approach based on the merging of uniform blocks is also described. Experimental results show that the improved scheme provides higher compression ratios compared to ordinary VPIC.

Color image coding using morphological pyramid decomposition
Presents a new algorithm that utilizes mathematical morphology for pyramidal coding of color images. The authors obtain lossy color image compression by using block truncation coding at the pyramid levels to attain reduced data rates. The pyramid approach is attractive due to low computational complexity, simple parallel implementation, and the ability to produce acceptable color images at mode...
full textExtending Morphological Signatures for Visual Pattern Recognition
Morphological signatures are powerful descriptions of the image content which are based on the framework of mathematical morphology. These signatures can be computed on a global or local scale: they are called pattern spectra (or granulometries and antigranulometries) when measured on the complete images and morphological profiles when related to single pixels. Their goal is to measure shape di...
full textA New Iterative Fuzzy-Based Method for Image Enhancement (RESEARCH NOTE)
This paper presents a new filtering approach based on fuzzy-logic which has high performance in mixed noise environments. This filter is mainly based on the idea that each pixel is not allowed to be uniformly fired by each of the fuzzy rules. In the proposed filtering algorithm, the rule membership functions are tuned iteratively in order to preserve the image edges. Several test experiments we...
full textImage coding based on a morphological representation of wavelet data
In this paper, an experimental study of the statistical properties of wavelet coefficients of image data is presented, as well as the design of two different morphology-based image coding algorithms that make use of these statistics. A salient feature of the proposed methods is that, by a simple change of quantizers, the same basic algorithm yields high performance embedded or fixed rate coders...
full textBrain Volume Estimation Enhancement by Morphological Image Processing Tools
Background: Volume estimation of brain is important for many neurological applications. It is necessary in measuring brain growth and changes in brain in normal/abnormal patients. Thus, accurate brain volume measurement is very important. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for volume quantification due to excellent levels of image resolution and between-tissue contrast. St...
full textBilevel Visual Words Coding for Image Classification
Bag-of-Words approach has played an important role in recent works for image classification. In consideration of efficiency, most methods use kmeans clustering to generate the codebook. The obtained codebooks often lose the cluster size and shape information with distortion errors and low discriminative power. Though some efforts have been made to optimize codebook in sparse coding, they usuall...
