Validation of Shell Theory for Modeling the Radial Breathing Mode of a Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (RESEARCH NOTE)
Authors
Abstract:
In this paper, the radial breathing mode (RBM) frequency of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is studied based on the thin shell theory. For this purpose, SWCNT is considered as an elastic thin cylindrical shell. The dynamic equation of RBM is derived using the Hamilton’s principle. An analytical solution of the RBM frequency of SWCNT is obtained. The advantage of this formulation is that it shows the dependency of the RBM frequency to the mechanical properties of SWCNT, clearly. These investigations are very important to predict the accurate vibrational characteristics of SWCNTs which have potential applications in nanotube-filled nanocomposites that are used as sound absorbers. To show the accuracy of this work, the RBM frequencies of 40 different SWCNTs are obtained in excellent agreement with the available experimental results with relative errors less than 1%. Also, the RBM frequencies predicted by the present shell model are compared with those obtained by the other researchers based on the density-functional theory (DFT), and three-dimensional (3D) elasticity theory. The results emphasize the utility of thin shell theory for modeling and vibrational behaviour of the RBM frequency of SWCNT.

Radial Breathing Mode Frequency of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Via Multiple-Elastic Thin Shell Theory
In this paper, the radial breathing mode (RBM) frequencies of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are obtained based on the multiple-elastic thin shell model. For this purpose, MWCNT is considered as a multiple concentric elastic thin cylindrical shells, which are coupled through van der Waals (vdW) forces between two adjacent tubes. Lennard-Jones potential is used to calculate the vdW ...

full textModeling of the adsorption kinetics of Basic Red 46 on single-walled carbon nanotube and carboxylate group functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube
The present study was carried out to investigate the potential of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNTs) and carboxylate group functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT-COOH) as alternative adsorbents for the removal of Basic Red 46 (BR 46) from contaminated water by using batch adsorption studies. Effects of some key operating parameters such as pH, ionic strength and contact time on...
full textAnomaly in the radial breathing mode of resonant Raman scattering from vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotube films
Polarization-dependent resonance Raman spectra of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) array were measured such that the polarization of the scattered light was selected either parallel or perpendicular to that of the incident light. For the parallel configuration, radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks exhibited two different polarization dependencies. One group (dominated by a peak at 203 cm-1) ...
full textPostbuckling Equilibrium Path of a Long Thin-Walled Cylindrical Shell (Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube) under Axial Compression Using Energy Method
In this paper, an elastic shell model is presented for postbuckling prediction of a long thinwalledcylindrical shell under axial compression. The Ritz method is applied to solve the governingequilibrium equation of a cylindrical shell model based on the von-Karman type nonlinear differentialequations. The postbuckling equilibrium path is obtained using the energy method for a long thin-walledcy...
full textDynamic Stability of Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Based on Nonlocal Strain Gradient Theory
This paper deals with dynamic Stability of single walled carbon nanotube. Strain gradient theory and Euler-Bernouli beam theory are implemented to investigate the dynamic stability of SWCNT embedded in an elastic medium. The equations of motion were derived by Hamilton principle and non-local elasticity approach. The nonlocal parameter accounts for the small-size effects when dealing with nano-...
