Urolithiasis – do ureaplasmas play a role in etiology.
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Objective: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by urease-producing organisms, including ureaplasmas may contribute to the formation of urolithiasis. We aimed to determine the frequency of U. parvum and U. urealyticum among urology hospital patients with urinary stones. Methods: The study group included 30 men with urolithiasis. Urine samples were examined routinely for bacteria and by RT-PCR for ureaplasmal DNA. Statistical analysis was done by chi-square and Fisher test ( p<0.05 was statistically significant). Results & Conclusion: In patients with urolithiasis DNAs of Ureaplasma spp. were detected 2 times more frequently (20%) compared with controls (10%). We suggest the necessity to include detection of Ureaplasma spp. in the group of patients with urolithiasis and sterile leukocyturia.

Do psychosexual factors play a role in the etiology of provoked vestibulodynia? A critical review.
The aim of this review was to critically examine published studies concerning the psychosexual aspects of provoked vestibulodynia. Despite the presence of several methodological limitations, some findings were consistently replicated. full textDo steroid hormones play a role in the etiology of glioma?
Gliomas are the most common type of primary malignant brain tumor and have a very poor prognosis. Little is known, however, about the etiology of these tumors. Evidence from a number of sources suggests that endogenous steroid hormones may play a role in the development of gliomas. First, the descriptive epidemiology of glioma suggests a relative protection of females compared with males, parti...
full textDoes Sacrococcygeal Angle Play a Role on Pilonidal Sinus Etiology?
The predisposing factors for the development of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPD) still remain undetermined. Here, we investigate the sacrococcygeal angle as a possible predisposing factor for the development of disease. Consecutive male patients admitted to our clinic with the diagnosis of SPD were included. Sex, age and BMI matched healthy controls without SPD were enrolled to the study....

full textGender differences in pain: do emotions play a role?
BACKGROUND Research suggests that the influence of gender on the processing and experience of pain is a result of several mechanisms. One mediating variable is emotion, which may modulate pain through an interaction of valence (pleasant-unpleasant) and arousal (calm-excited). OBJECTIVE This review examines whether gender differences in the experience and processing of emotion contribute to di...
full textDo rational numbers play a role in selection for stochasticity?
When a given tissue must, to be able to perform its various functions, consist of different cell types, each fairly evenly distributed and with specific probabilities, then there are at least two quite different developmental mechanisms which might achieve the desired result. Let us begin with the case of two cell types, and first imagine that the proportion of numbers of cells of these types s...
