Abstract:

Compounds I, II and III, were used as models resembling gear systems (bods connecting CR3 groups to the skeletal molecule are parallel) in surveying the potential energy surface for their internal rotation. The magnitude of the barriers calculated for averaging the NMR signals, placed these compounds in the range of measurement accessible by dynamic NMR spectroscopy (which is currently being pursued).

Synthesis, Characterization and Fungicidal Activity of Some Dialkyl Alkylphosphonates and Dialkyl Phenylphosphonates

Some dialkyl alkylphosphonates and dialkyl phenylphosphonates were synthesized by the reactions between trialkyl phosphite and alkyl/aryl halide in the presence of benzene. The synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC), fourier –transform infrared, ( 1 H, 13 C) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques. In vitro fungicidal ac...

Convenient access to readily soluble symmetrical dialkyl-substituted α-oligofurans.

An expedient approach to the synthesis of well soluble symmetrical dialkyl-substituted α-oligofurans containing up to 8 π-conjugated furan heterocycles is reported. An ultimate symmetry and high solubility of these α-oligofurans were guaranteed using the 3,3'-diheptyl-2,2'-bifuran core and its symmetrical elongation through Suzuki-Miyaura or Stille cross-couplings. 3,3'-Diheptyl-2,2'-bifuran wa...

Three papers in the Journal this month examine the impact on service use of particular service developments and patient/illness characteristics. Williams et al (pp. 480–485) compared patterns of service use, including hospital admission rates, before and after the introduction of a triage admission system in one large innercity mental health organisation. Overall, little difference was found be...

Several papers in the BJPsych this month address issues arising from the overlap or comorbidity between mental and physical ill health. In a UK sample of individuals with affective disorders, Forty et al (pp. 465–472) found significantly increased rates of several medical illnesses among those with bipolar and unipolar disorder compared with controls. Among those with affective disorder, migrai...

Two papers in the Journal this month examine patterns of prescribing practice. With established clinical guidelines for the management of individuals with treatment-resistant schizophrenia in mind, Howes et al (pp. 481–485) reviewed prescribing practices prior to commencement of clozapine for a sample of patients managed within one mental health service. The authors found evidence of a signific...

Chiral Quaternary Carbon Compounds. Ii. an Asymmetric Synthesis of (r) or (s)-4,4-dialkyl-z-cyclopentenones

The chiral bicyclic lactam (2) derived from levulinic acid and (S)-valinol is sequentially alkylated and then cleaved to 2,2-dialkyl levulinaldehyde (5) which is cyclized to the title products (2) in > 99% ee.
