Two Lung Cancer Development-Related Genes, Forkhead Box M1 (FOXM1) and Apolipoprotein E (APOE), are overexpressed in Bronchial of Patients after Long-Term Exposure to Sulfur Mustard
Authors
Abstract:
Sulfur mustard (SM) is a strong alkylating and mutagenic compound that targets humanairway system. We considered the expression of Forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) and apolipoproteinE (APOE) genes, which are responsible for cell proliferation, differentiation, tumorigenesis, and increased risk of lung cancer, in the lung bronchial tissue of patients exposed to SM.After performing pulmonary functional tests (PFTs), 11 human subjects (five controls and sixSM-exposed patients) were entered in this study. Total RNA were extracted from all biopsysamples and then cDNA was synthesised for each specimen using RT-PCR. Changes in geneexpression were measured using a RT2 Profiler ™PCR Array. PFTs have demonstrated moreobstructive and restrictive spirometric patterns among patients compared to the controls. Ahigher expression was recorded for both examined genes in bronchial of SM-exposed patients.Expression of FOXM1 and APOE genes in bronchial of the patients was significantly (p

Prognostic Significance of Forkhead Box M1 (FOXM1) Expression and Antitumor Effect of FOXM1 Inhibition in Angiosarcoma
BACKGROUND The prognosis of angiosarcoma is poor and a novel treatment option for the disease is desired. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of Forkhead box M1 (FOXM1), a transcription factor that regulates cell-cycle progression and various crucial processes in tumor progression, and its potential as a new therapeutic target. METHODS We investigated 125 angi...
full textCXCL10 Gene Expression in the Lung Tissue of Sulfur Mustard-Exposed Patients with Long-Term Pulmonary Complications
Aims: Mustard gas is an alkalizing substance that can lead to damage to DNA and intracellular enzymes. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of CXCL10 in chemically-injured veterans’ lung tissue. Materials & Methods: This case-control study was done on 16 lung paraffin blocks of individuals exposed to mustard gas and 7 lungs paraffin blocks not-exposed people as...
full textLong-term effects of Sulfur Mustard gas exposure on the skin of Iranian combaters
Background: During imposed war (1980-1988) Iraq frequently used chemical warfare particularly mustard gas. Skin is frequently involved in victims. Objective: Our main objective was to evaluate chronic skin manifestations due to exposure to mustard gas 10-19 years after exposure in a case-control study. Patients and Methods: 101 chemically wounded combators and 121 non-chemically wounded c...
full textReflux esophagitis in war-related sulfur mustard lung disease
Background: Sulfur mustard (SM) has acute and chronic effects on skin and mucosal surfaces. The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of esophagitis in a historical cohort of veterans who had been exposed to SM in Iran-Iraq war nearly 25 years ago. Methods : One hundred two veterans with dyspepsia and/or heartburn underwent esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy. Of them, 52 cases had been e...
