این عفونت ناشی از توکسو پلاسموگندی که یک انگل تک یاخته درون سلولی است بوجود می آید. عفونت توکسو پلاسما در طبیعت همه جاگیر بوده و یکی از شایعترین عفونتهای نهفته در انسان بشمار می رود. این عفونت در حاملگی نادر نیست و می تواند بطور قابل ملاحظه ای به جنین نیز منتقل گردد.
