The Role of EDD (Exercise Capacity, Dyspnea, and Diffusing Capacity of Lungs for Carbon Monoxide) Index in Pulmonary Fibrosis Secondary to Scleroderma
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Pulmonary involvement secondary to Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in SSc patients. We designed this study to determine the correlation of important lung function parameters with lung High Resolution CT (HRCT) scan findings. Materials and Methods: Thirty–two consecutive diffuse SSc patients with pulmonary fibrosis were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Patients with pulmonary fibrosis secondary to other causes, previous restrictive lung disease, and history of smoking were excluded. Complete lung function evaluation was performed. The EDD (Exercise capacity, Dyspnea, and Diffusing capacity of lungs for carbon monoxide) index was determined. The Warrick score was calculated based on lung HRCT findings. Results: The mean age of the patients was 39.18 years ±9.39 (SD).Seventeen (53%) patients were in EDD stage 1 (score: 0≤score≤3), 9 patients (28%) in stage 2 (3

full text[The measurement of pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide].
The pulmonary diffusing capacity for oxygen (DLo,) is of great physiological and clinical significance (1). Its measurement, however, is relatively complex (2). Pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLco) which, it is usually assumed,' can be converted to DL02 from the known solubilities and molecular weights of the two gases, is, in general, more readily measured. Further, since th...
full textEffect of hyperlipidaemia on pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide.
There is conflicting evidence on the effect of hyperlipidaemia on pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO or TLCO) in man. We have measured the carbon monoxide transfer factor per unit alveolar volume (TLCO/VA or KCO) by the single breath method in 25 patients with hyperlipidaemia, and in three normal subjects before and after infusions of an intravenous fat emulsion, Intralipid....
full textEffect of lung resection on exercise capacity and on carbon monoxide diffusing capacity during exercise.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of lung resection on lung function and exercise capacity values, including diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (Dlco), during exercise, and to determine whether postoperative lung function, including exercise capacity and Dlco during exercise, could be predicted from preoperative lung function and the number of functional segments resected. DESI...

Maximal Diffusing Capacity of the Lung for Carbon Monoxide.
The measurement of co uptake (VCO and DLCO) from alveolar gas is a unique way to noninvasively assess pulmonary vascular function, specifically the functional volume of the pulmonary capillary bed. Proper interpretation of results, however, needs to account for inherent assumptions regarding co distribution and timing procedures. Moreover, reasonable airway mechanics, lung volumes, and patient ...
