The effect of respiratory exposure to benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene on the spirometric indices among the petroleum products loading workers

Authors

Abstract:

Abstract Background and Aim: Benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene (BTEX) are the most important aromatic compounds in petroleum products. BTEX compounds due to their high vapor pressure, easily change to gas form and mixed with ambient air. Petroleum products loading workers are exposed to these compounds by the inhalation of BTEX compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of respiratory BTEX exposure on lung function tests. Method: A cross sectional study in summer of 2015 on petroleum products loading workers was performed to determine workers' exposure to benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene. Eighteen individual samples of air in the breathing zone using active approach by use of activated charcoal were taken. To determine and evaluate of lung function, spirometric tests was performed according to OSHA protocols. Results: The results of analysis of samples showed that the average exposure to benzene was above the occupational exposure limit and the average exposure to ethyl benzene, toluene and xylene were below the occupational exposure limit. Lung functions indices including FVC, FEV1, FEV1 / FVC and FEF25-75 were reduced. Conclusion: The results showed that exposure to BTEX compounds could affect lung function indices, and reduced them.

Evaluating the effects of maternal exposure to benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene on oral clefts among offspring in Texas: 1999-2008.

BACKGROUND There is evidence from previous studies that maternal occupational exposure to hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) is positively associated with oral clefts; however, studies evaluating the association between residential exposure to these toxicants and oral clefts are lacking. Therefore, our goal was to conduct a case-control study examining the association between estimated maternal re...

abstract the present study tried to investigate the effect of visual aids (films) on the development of the speech act of disagreement among iranian efl intermediate learners. to this end, the researcher selected 40 homogeneous intermediate learners based on their scores on oxford placement test. .the subjects then divided into control group and experimental group. both classes were tested by ...

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Occupational exposure to benzene, toluene and xylene and the lymphocyte lysosomal N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase.

In 108 workers occupationally exposed to benzene, toluene and xylene the numbers of lymphocytes containing intact lysosomes having cytochemically determined activity of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) were calculated in the peripheral blood. The benzene, toluene and xylene concentration in the air of at work places were 0-370, 0-580 and 0-506 mg/cu. m, respectively. The phenol concentrati...
