The effect of Ramadan fasting on hematological parameters
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Ramadan fasting is an obligation for many Muslims around the world who abstain from eating and drinking for one month, which has different medical and physiological effects, such as reducing blood pressure, lipid profile, blood glucose, and body weight. It has also been hypothesized that Ramadan fasting may induce some changes in the hematologic parameters. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effect of Ramadan fasting on blood cell count (CBC), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Methods: In the present study, 59 adult healthy individuals, who had completed one month of Ramadan fasting were included. Fasting blood samples were analyzed for ESR, hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), white blood cell (WBC), platelet count (PLT), mean corpuscular Volume (MCV) and mean platelet volume (MPV), one day before, on the second and last week of Ramadan and one month after Ramadan (phase I , II, III, and IV, respectively). Results: 34 men and 25 women with an age range of 15 to 24 years participated in the study. Mean ESR increased significantly (except phase IV, in comparison phase III). Mean Hb and Hct levels were significantly greater in phase III than phase I (P

The effects of Ramadan fasting and physical activity on body composition and hematological biochemical parameters
Introduction: Hunger and reduction in regular energy intake can lead to a number of problems based on their intensity. For instance, low energy level can cause blood cell production to decline or it may pose a higher risk of anemia. It can also weaken the immune system and platelet aggregation or negatively affect clot formation. This study aimed to have a closer look at fasting and regular phy...

full textPhysical activity during Ramadan fasting: Effects on body composition, hematological and biochemical parameters
–Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. The uniqueness of Ramadan is that food and fluid intake is concentrated into the hours between sunset and the following sunrise. Many participants of Ramadan maintain physical activity during Ramadan. However, the effect of practicing physical activity during Ramadan on body composition, hematological and biochemical parameters is not well ...

Introduction: Fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory for healthy Muslims after the age of puberty. This paper was aimed to compare the changes in hematological and biochemical parameters before and after Ramadan. Methods:This prospective study was performed one week before and one week after the month of Ramadan in 2015. Eighty-nine subjects (51males and 38 females) with a mean age ...
full textEffect of Ramadan Fasting on Renal Physiology
All the world's religions recommend a period of fasting, and of these, one whole month of intermittent fasting every year is particular to Islam. Muslims have two meals, one immediately after sunset and the other just before dawn with a period of fasting ranging from 11-18 hours. Therefore, we can assume that physiological changes occurring during Ramadan would be different from those occurring...
