Abstract:

Background Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a small subpopulation of cancer cells with self-renewal and differentiation ability. Furthermore, CSCs are resistant to chemoradiotherapy due to their high level of detoxifying enzymes, strong DNA repair abilities, and high drug efflux capacity. Objective Therefore, CSCs are supposed to account for cancer initiation, progression, metastasis, recurrence, and therapeutic resistance. Methods In this regard, the development of CSC targeting therapies and discoveries of drugs that can target and eradicate the CSCs has been recognized as a promising approach to improve cancer survival rate or even to cure patients with cancers.  The content of this article is a review of 100 articles published in prestigious international journals. Search in Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct were conducted using keyword combinations of “cancer stem cell,” “phytochemical,” “cancer therapy,” “chemotherapy,” and “radiotherapy.” This review aims to provide an overview of CSCs properties, their molecular mechanisms, and related signaling pathways involved in their chemoradiotherapy resistance. Also, we are going to discuss some important phytochemicals and their mechanism for targeting CSCs.  Findings According to many research studies, using plant-derived compounds in the treatment of cancer can have synergistic effects on chemo-medications.  Conclusion Plant-derived compounds have fewer side effects and can reduce the relapse rate of cancers by targeting cancer stem cells.

Natural and herbal compounds targeting breast cancer, a review based on cancer stem cells

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are known as the major reason for therapy resistance. Recently, natural herbal compounds are suggested to have a significant role in inhibiting the breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs). The aim of this study was to explore the effective natural herbal compounds against BCSCs.This review article was designed based on the BCSCs, mechanisms of therapy resistance and natural he...

The Molecular Mechanisms of Plant-Derived Compounds Targeting Brain Cancer

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the most aggressive and malignant forms of brain tumors. Despite recent advances in operative and postoperative treatments, it is almost impossible to perform complete resection of these tumors owing to their invasive and diffuse nature. Several natural plant-derived products, however, have been demonstrated to have promising therapeutic effects, such tha...

Plant-derived compounds in treatment of leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is a neglected public health problem caused by the protozoan species belonging to the genus Leishmania affecting mostly the poor populations of developing countries. The causative organism is transmitted by female sandflies. Cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral clinical manifestations are the most frequent forms of leishmaniasis. Chemotherapy still relies on the use of pentavale...

The Regenerative Effect of Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cells in Spermatogenesis of Infertile Hamster

BACKGROUND Infertility is a serious social problem in advanced nations, with male factor in half of all cases of infertility. This study was conducted to determine the regenerative effect of bone marrow-derived stem cells in spermatogenesis of infertile hamster. METHODS Twelve adult male hamsters were equally divided into azoospermic and control groups. Busulfan was intraperitoneally used fo...
