The effect of feeding strategies on growth performance, hematological indices, and biochemical parameters in male rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) broodstocks

Authors

Abstract:

This investigation was carried out to determine the effect of feeding strategies on growth performance, biochemical parameters, and hematological indices in male rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) broodstocks. For this purpose, 45 broodstocks with 475.55 ± 54.24 g (mean ± S.D) were divided into three treatments and fed at satiation, restricted feeding (50% of satiation limit), and starvation levels in concrete ponds. The flow rate was 1 liter per second for each replicate and the broodstocks were fed for 8 weeks with extruded feed. According to the results, the final weight of the starvation treatment had a significant decrease compared to the restricted and satiated treatments (p<0.05). Moreover, the weight gain, body weight increase and specific growth rate showed significant differences among the treatments (p<0.05), but the condition factor was not significantly different (p>0.05). A significant difference was observed in feed conversion ratio between the restricted and satiated groups (p<0.05). Hematological indices did not show any significant difference between the treatments (p>0.05). In the blood biochemical parameters, plasma glucose level in the starvation treatment showed a significant difference with the restricted feeding and satiation treatments (p<0.05). In addition, blood globulin level of the starved fish was significantly different with the starvation treatment (p<0.05). In general, the present study showed that unpredictable stresses during the breeding season and the consequent reduction or interruption of feeding regimes could adversely affect the performance of male breeders, including growth indices and some physiological parameters.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of probiotic on growth performance and hematological indices in male rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) broodstock. For this purpose, broodstock with an average initial weight of 1366.14 ± 33.85 g (mean ± S.E.M) were fed for 8 weeks with diets containing 0, 0.5, 1 and 2 g.kg-1 Bio-Aqua probiotic. At the end of the period, growth performance an...

Effect of curcumin and ginger extract on growth and biochemical indices in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

In this experiment, the effect of curcumin and ginger hydroalcoholic extract on growth performance and biochemical indicators of blood in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were examined separately and in combination. The experiment was designed in a completely randomized design with zero levels (control), 0.5% ginger hydroalcoholic extract, 0.5% curcumin and 0.5% curcumin composition + 0.5% g...

The Effect of earth worm (Eisenia fetida) on growth and hematological indices in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Feeds is major of current values in intensive fish and other aquatic animal culture (30-60% approximately). Therefore, aquaculture scientists have been attempted to find feed costs decreasing approaches. Earth worm (Eisenia fetida) is one of the most important commercial species. It can use in fish farming especially rainbow trout farms. Therefore, the study was conducted to investigate E.fet...

Effects of riboflavin on growth, hematological and immunological parameters of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings

The fishing industry is deeply dependent on complex and high quality diets consisting of dry feed, vitamins and micro/macro-elements. The suitable dose of each essential nutrient is different based on the fish species, their age and physiological conditions. In this study, the effects of two recommended doses of riboflavin (20 and 30 mg vitamin per each kg dry feed) on growth, hematological and...

Effects of the Pomegranate powder on the Body composition, hematological and biochemical indices of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss ).

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pomegranate powder on the body composition, hematological, and biochemical indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Pomegranate peel powder was added to the experimental diets at 0 (control), 1, 2, 3 and 4 % with 3 replicates. In a completely randomized design, 450 rainbow trout with an average weight of 45±5 g were reared in 15 cem...

Effect of dietary aloe vera on growth and lipid peroxidation indices in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Aloe vera has been used worldwide in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries due to the plethora of biological activities of its constituents. This study was done to evaluate the effects of dietary aloe vera on growth and lipid peroxidation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). A total number of 480 O. mykiss (mean weight 9.50 ± 0.85 g) were randomized into four experimental groups inclu...
