Abstract:

Background   Regarding abnormalities in thalassemia major (TM) patients and the effects of leptin and ferritin on heart, aimed to investigate the possible relationship between leptin, ferritin and cardiac involvement in TM patients compared to controls.   Materials and Methods   In total 141 individuals entered to the present case-control study that consisted of 66 TM patients matched in age and sex with 75 healthy controls. The case group selected from those patients attending to the clinic of Ali Asghar Hospital, Zahedan-Iran. From participants, 5ml blood takes by a nurse and was isolated from serum samples in order to analyze ferritin and leptin levels. Major proceedings in patients were checking medical history, physical examination, chest X-ray and Electrocardiogram (ECG) that performed before echocardiography by unique cardiologist. The participants subjected to conventional examination for both right and left heart functions.   Results   Leptin level (p=0.026), height, weight and body mass index (BMI) were lower in patients (p

Soluble E-selectin and P-Selectin Serum Levels in Patients with Psoriasis Compared to Healthy Controls

Introduction: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease in which abnormal individual immune reactivity plays an important role. Eselectin and P-selectin are adhesion molecules expressed on vascular endothelial cells in several inflammatory skin diseases, including psoriasis. The aim of the present study was to describe selected immunological changes, concerning adhesion molecules status (sEsele...

Correlation of Serum Ferritin Level with Cardiac Function in β-Thalassemia Major

Background: The most important problem in regular transfusion dependent β-thalassemia major is cardiac dysfunction due to iron deposition in it. The aim of this study was to evaluate correlation between serum ferritin levels and cardiac function in β-thalassemia major in Mofid Hospital. Materials and Methods: There were 112 β-thalassemia patients with a mean age of 13.55± 6.12 years, of whom 49...

Correlation between Heart and Liver Iron Levels Measured by MRI T2* and Serum Ferritin in Patients with β-thalassemia Major

Background Transfusion-induced iron overload leads to many complications in patients with β-thalassemia major. This study aimed to compare the level of iron stored in the liver and heart measured by MRI T2 * with ferritin levels in these patients. Materials and Methods This study was done on 52 patients with β-thalassemia major aged 7 to 29 years. Serum ferritin level was checked and heart and ...

Association between serum ferritin level and diastolic cardiac function in patients with major β-thalassemia

Abstract Background Prevention of myocardial siderosis is a key step to reduce rate of mortality in thalassemic patients. Our objective was to study association between echocardiography parameters and serum ferritin level in patients with major thalassemia. Materials and Methods Sixty-six patients with major thalassemia were studied in Amir Kabir hospital, Arak, Iran. Serum ferritin levels ...

The Correlation between Troponin and Ferritin Serum Levels in the Patients with Major Beta-Thalassemia

BACKGROUND Thalassemia is a hereditary hemoglobinopathy whose most common complication is cardiac involvement which ends up in these patients' death. Since troponin is a sensitive and specific marker for the detection of microinfarct, we studied the relationship between troponin and ferritin serum levels for early diagnosis of cardiac involvement in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This ...

Relation between bone mineral density and serum ferritin levels in patients with thalassemia major

Background: Thalassemia/haemoglobinopathy is a hereditary disease with increased erythropoiesis and expansion of the bone marrow cavity. Consequently, there is a reduction in trabecular bone tissue resulting in osteopenia/osteoporosis. The present study was performed to determine bone mineral density (BMD) in children and adolescents with major thalassemia and its correlation with serum fer...
