Abstract:

Case Description- A 4-year-old male homer pigeon (Columba livia) with anorexia, lethargy, emaciation, and abdominal distention was referred to Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Clinical Findings- Palpation revealed a solid mass in the caudal coelomic region. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations showed caudal coelomic soft tissue mass. On the base of the clinical and paraclinical evaluations, coelomic mass was diagnosed presumptively. Treatment and Outcome- Because of the importance of racing aspect of the pigeon, surgical remove of the mass was done. One week after surgery, there were no postsurgical complications, and the bird recovered uneventfully. Histopathologic findings identified a well-organized encapsulated granuloma. In three years follow up no recurrence of the signs was reported. Clinical Relevance- Successful surgery of occupying lesion has not been described in pigeons frequently. According to solid mass dimension (6×6×5 cm) with well-organized encapsulated granuloma, this situation is a rare case.

Genetic analyses of visual pigments of the pigeon (Columba livia).

We isolated five classes of retinal opsin genes rh1(Cl), rh2(Cl), sws1(Cl), sws2(Cl), and lws(Cl) from the pigeon; these encode RH1(Cl), RH2(Cl), SWS1(Cl), SWS2(Cl), and LWS(Cl) opsins, respectively. Upon binding to 11-cis-retinal, these opsins regenerate the corresponding photosensitive molecules, visual pigments. The absorbance spectra of visual pigments have a broad bell shape with the peak,...

Caudal duplication (dipygus) in a Rock Pigeon (Columba livia)

Congenital defects are those abnormalities present at birth that result from errors arising during development (Noden and de la Hunta, 1985). Congenital duplications are interesting among congenital defects because they are composed by two individuals. Multiple births most frequently result from fertilization of separately ovulated female gametes. However, complete or partial separation of clea...

The retino-thalamo-hyperstriatal pathway in the pigeon (Columba livia).

1. The distribution of labeled macromolecules was studied within the dorsolateral thalamic nuclei of the pigeon after unilateral intraocular injection of either aH-proline, 3H-leucine or aH-fueose. The highest densities of grains were found in nucleus dorsolateralis anterior, pars lateralis at its dorsolateral aspect (DLLd) and in nucleus lateralis anterior (LA) whereas moderate labeling was ob...

A Rare Congenital Anomaly of Wing in a Pigeon Chick (Columba livia)

Case Description- A 20-day-old pigeon chick with left wing distal to the carpal joint into left flank presented to our avian medicine and surgery clinic. Clinical Findings-The bird had a mal-shaped wing structure, whereas the axial skeleton, thoracic and pelvic limbs skeleton were normal radiographically and clinically, excluding the left wing. The only clinical sign observed was recumbency. Tr...

Histochemical and histological studies on the pancreas in mature pigeon (Columba Livia)

The objective of this investigation was to study the histochemical and histological structure of the pancreas in pigeons. Samples were obtained from 9 male and 9 female adult clinically healthy pigeons. Tissue sections were stained with haematoxylin eosin, Verhoeff’s, Gomori’s method for reticulum, Masson’s trichrome and Maldonado’s methods for pancreatic islet cells. The pancreas of adult pige...
