Study of some growth traits of common reed )Phragmites australis( in Iran

author

Abstract:

Most of the research on Phragmites australis is restricted to sites on the European continent even though P. australis occurs abundantly in many regions in the Asian and other continents under different climatic and habitat conditions. The populations used in this study were collected from different parts of Iran. All these populations were grown in the same conditions in experimental field, located in Agricultural Science Department Research Station (University of Tehran). The rhizomes of 39 populations of common reed were planted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. At the end of season, some growth traits were measured. The comparison of the traits revealed differences in shoot length, shoot diameter, shoot internodes, leaf area, panicle length, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight, panicle dry weight, percent of flowering shoots, start panicle formation (days after planting) and senecence time (days after planting) among common reed populations in Iran. A dendrogram was prepared on the basis of studied traits using the UPGMA algorithm and separated the 39 populations into four groups which were mainly in accordance with geographical origins.

analysis of genetic diversity among populations of common reed (phragmites australis) in iran

the common reed (phragmites australis) is a perennial weed with the largest geographical distribution of any flowering plant in the world. in this study, 39 populations of common reed were collected and random amplified polymorphic dna (rapd) markers were used to characterize the genetic diversity among these populations. the 16 primers used in this study, amplified 149 scorable rapd bands amon...

A Comparison of the Functional Traits of Common Reed (Phragmites australis) in Northern China: Aquatic vs. Terrestrial Ecotypes

Common reed (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) is distributed widely throughout the world with various ecotypes. This research compares the functional traits and biomass allocation patterns of two contrasting reed ecotypes. Twelve pairs of aquatic and terrestrial reed samples were collected in northern China. Significant differences in functional traits between the two reed ecotypes ...

Effect of Supplementing Common Reed (Phragmites australis) with Urea on Intake, Apparent Digestibility and Blood Metabolites of Baluchi Sheep

To evaluate the effects of treating or supplementing common reed (Phragmites australis) with 2% urea on intake, nutrient apparent digestibility, and blood metabolites, fifteen Baluchi rams (35.4±2.3 kg body weight) were used in a completely randomized design. Treatments were as follows: 1) common reed, 2) common reed supplemented with 2% urea solution at feeding, and 3) common reed tre...

Effect of EDTA treatment method on leaching of Pb and Cr by Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steudel (common reed)

One of the major problems about the chelant-enhanced phytoextraction is the potential metal leaching associated with chelant application. A glasshouse pot experiment was conducted to investigate phytoextraction efficiency of common reed (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel) for Lead and Chromium and to determine EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) enhancement of the mobility and phy...

EM-A1gorithm as a too1 for structure analysis of stands of the common reed ( Phragmites australis)

27 r Ostendorp, W. and Möller, J., 1991. EM-algorithm as a tool for structure analysis of stands of the common reed (Phragmites australis). Ecol. Modelling, 53: 27-38. The frequency distributions of morphometric and mechanical properties of randomly sampled stalks of seven reed stands at Lake Constance-Untersee are analysed by the Estimation-Maximisation Algorithm. The aim was to look for compo...

Resistance strategies of Phragmites australis (common reed) to Pb pollution in flood and drought conditions

Resistance strategies of clonal organs, and parent and offspring shoots of Phragmites australis (common reed) to heavy metal pollution in soils are not well known. To clarify the tolerance or resistance strategies in reeds, we conducted a pot experiment with five levels of Pb concentration (0∼4,500 mg kg-1) in flood and drought conditions. Lead toxicity had no inhibitory effect on the number of...
