Study of soil moisture change effects on L-band DInSAR phase

Authors

Abstract:

The Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) technique is recognized as a potential remote sensing tool for detecting ground surface displacements with less than a centimetre accuracy. The surface soil moisture changes ( 1clip_image001.png" > ) during the time between the two images as an effective parameter on interferometry phase 1clip_image002.png" > ), leads to incorrect calculation of  ground  movement  .   In this research, the amount and the way that  1clip_image001.png" >  affects 1clip_image003.png" >  on  wheat, rapeseed, weed, pea and idle land fields have been investigated empirically using  a regression model.  To do this investigation,  airborne data UAVSAR (L-band) along with ground-based data in the CanEx-SM10 campaign in 2010 were used. According to the scattergraphs between 1clip_image003.png" >  and 1clip_image001.png" > , and observing a direct and approximately linear relationship between them, some hypotheses were taken into consideration in order to use a regression modeling . A Polarimetric First-Order Model of Soil Moisture Effects on the DInSAR Coherence

Changes in soil moisture between two radar acquisitions can impact the observed coherence in differential interferometry: both coherence magnitude |γ| and phase φ are affected. The influence on the latter potentially biases the estimation of deformations. These effects have been found to be variable in magnitude and sign, as well as dependent on polarization, as opposed to predictions by existi...

Salinity Effects on L-band Microwave Remote Sensing of Soil Moisture

Global satellite missions for measuring soil moisture will assume that soil salinity is unimportant for soil moisture retrieval, but many parts of the world have large areas of highly saline soil. Approximately 7% of the earth’s continental surface area is salt-affected [1], so failing to account for potential salinity-effects could compromise soil moisture satellite missions. Significant work ...

Retrieval Bare-soil Moisture Using L-band Sar

This paper reports a study of algorithm development and testing for soil moisture retrieval for bare fields using L-band SAR imagery. First-order surface scattering models predict that the co-polarization ratio is sensitive to soil moisture but not to surface roughness. Our previous study indicated that the measurement of (Jvv / (Jhh at L-band is proportional to soil moisture. In this study, th...

Effective soil moisture sampling depth of L-band radiometry: A case study

a r t i c l e i n f o The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of the soil moisture sampling depth in the parameterization of soil emission in microwave radiometry at L-band. The analysis is based on brightness temperature, soil moisture and temperature measurements acquired over a bare soil during the SMOSREX experiment. A more detailed profile of surface soil moisture was obtained wi...

The effect of rock cover fraction on the retrieval of surface soil moisture at L-band

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), will be launched in the second half of 2009. It will be the first L-band (~1.4 GHz) passive microwave satellite specifically designed for global soil moisture observations, with an expected accuracy for the retrieved soil moisture of ~0.04 m/m. While passive microwave observations have been widely...

On the retrieval of soil moisture content over agricultural sites using L band SAR data

Soil moisture content is a parameter of major importance for land applications at both watershed and regional scale such as hydrology and agriculture. In the past, a vast number of experimental and theoretical studies relating radar measurements to soil and vegetation parameters have been conducted. Such studies have widely demonstrated the sensitivity of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) measurem...
