Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) analysis in Karoon 3 Watershed under climate change

author

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate climate change impact on Karoon3 basin in future periods. For this purpose, the simulated precipitation of 10 AOGCM models, including BCM2.0, CGCM3T63, CNRMCM3, CSIROMK3.0, GFDLCM2.0, GISS-ER, HADCM3, INMCM3.0, IPSLCM4, MIROC3.2 MEDRES was used to simulate drought index. Monthly precipitation was calculated by inverse distance weighted method. Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) was used as watershed drought index. SPI was calculated in 6, 12 and 24 months periods. To determine the feasibility of future periods meteorological data production of LRAS-WG5 model, calibration and verification was performed for the base year (1980-2007). Meteorological data simulation for future periods under General Circulation Models and climate change IPCC scenarios was performed and then the drought frequency and intensity using SPI under climate change effects analyzed. Results showed that normal and wet SPI category is more frequent in B1 and A2 emissions scenarios than A1B. Results showed that difference between maximum and minimum monthly temperature will decline in spring and summer. Drought years are more frequent under A1B and in 2080-2099 periods.

Agricultural Drought Frequency, Duration analysis in Karoon 3 Watershed under climate change

The aim of this study is investigation of climate change impact on Karoon3 basin in future periods. For this purpose, the simulated precipitation and potential evapotranspirationof four AOGCM models was used to simulate drought index. Monthly precipitation was calculated by inverse distance weighted method. Reclamation Drought Index (RDI) was used as watershed drought index. RDI was calculated ...

Precipitation Extremes Under Climate Change

The response of precipitation extremes to climate change is considered using results from theory, modeling, and observations, with a focus on the physical factors that control the response. Observations and simulations with climate models show that precipitation extremes intensify in response to a warming climate. However, the sensitivity of precipitation extremes to warming remains uncertain w...

drought monitoring based on standardized precipitation evaoptranspiration index (spei) under the effect of climate change

introduction: drought is a natural and recurrent feature of climate. the characterizations of it may change under the effect of climate change in future periods. during the last few decades a number of different indices have been developed to quantify drought probabilities. droughts are caused by disruptions to an expected precipitation pattern and can be intensified by unusually high temperatu...

Assessing the climate change effects on Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), case study: Latian dam

Studying climate change and its effect on the intensity and frequency of drought can help the proper use of water resources and adaptation to the destructive effects of the drought phenomenon in the future decades. In recent decades, rising global temperatures have disturbed the planetchr('39')s climate balance and caused widespread climate change in most parts of the world. This research trie...

Uncertainty Investigation of Precipitation and Temperature Scenarios for the Sira Basin under Climate Change Impact

Results of assessment of the future climate change impacts is associated with some uncertainties. Considering the range of uncertainties increases reliability of the results. In this study, climate change impacts on daily precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature of Sira basin are assessed using LARS-WG model, for 2036-65 period. Accordingly, uncertainty of new emissions scenarios (RCP2.6،...

GIS analysis for vulnerability assessment of drought in Khuzestan province in Iran using standardized precipitation index (SPI)

The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is a widely used drought index to provide good estimations of the intensity, magnitude and spatial extent of droughts. The objective of this study was to analyze the spatial pattern of drought by SPI index. In this paper, patterns of drought hazard in Khuzestan are evaluated according to the data of 17 weather stations during data recording. The influe...
