Stability of Silica Nanoparticle Dispersion in Brine Solution: An Experimental Study
Authors
Abstract:
Nanotechnology has various applications in oil and gas industry such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The main challenge in using nanoparticles in EOR processes is their stability in harsh conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, and intermediate to high salinity. However, most of the recent experimental works have been performed under unrealistic conditions such as the use of distilled water as the injected fluid and room temperature. The main objective of this work is to study the effect of these factors on the stability of nanoparticle dispersions through several methods such as direct observation, optical absorption measurement, and nanoparticle effective diameter in different periods of time. The critical salt concentration (CSC) was determined for two kinds of monovalent electrolytes in various particle concentrations and temperatures. The results have shown that CSC for potassium chloride (KCl) is less than sodium chloride (NaCl) and it decreases as nanoparticle concentration and temperature increase. Moreover, the influence of two types of surfactants on the stability of silica dispersions was studied and the results revealed that an anionic surfactant increases the CSC, while a nonionic surfactant leads to the instability of dispersion even at low electrolyte concentrations.

15 صفحه اولAn experimental study of price dispersion
Price comparison sites have become an increasingly popular way to shop online. Yet, even though consumers have complete access to the list of prices for apparently identical products offered on these sites, persistent price dispersion has been widely observed. One important theoretical explanation for this phenomenon comes from clearinghouse models of price dispersion. These models predict that...
full textAn Experimental Study on Toughening Mechanisms of Fillers in Epoxy/ Silica Nanocomposites
In this paper, a systematic study on the effects of particle size and hybrid of two different size of silica nanoparticles on the toughening mechanisms of bisphenol-A epoxy was conducted. Nanosilica particles with mean diameter of 17 nm and 65 nm were blended into epoxy system. Probable synergy effects of these two nanoparticles on Young’s modulus and yield strength have been investigated. ...
full textDispersion stability and drying behavior of colloidal silica
Colloidal suspensions containing nano-sized particles are used in numerous applications such as batteries, inks and paints, and also used as precursors to a wide variety of industrial materials. The ability to control the microstructure during drying is important for many potential applications. When it comes to solar cell technology, controlling the microstructure plays a critical role ranging...
