Abstract:

The optimum dose of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to produce gynogenetic Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius, with emphasis on the "Hertwig effect" and photoreactivation (PR) were investigated. The sperm of Caspian salmon was irradiated with UV at 2010 ? 200 ?w.cm-2 in different times including 0, 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35 and 45 min and was allowed to fertilize normal ova; the fertilization, eyed and hatching rates were calculated to assess the performance. Using the irradiated sperm decreased the fertilization, eyed as well as hatching rates and the so-called "Hertwig effect" was observed, with the time-dependent decrease in the hatching rates at 0+ to 3 min irradiation, but better hatching rates were observed at more prolonged irradiation times. The best hatching rate was achieved at 25 min of UV irradiation; after that the survival rates rapidly declined to near zero. For PR studies, the semen was irradiated with UV (5, 30 and 120s) and untreated semen (0s) was used as control. Irradiated semen and/or fertilized eggs by treated semen were exposed to visible light (60 W) at a distance of 30 cm for 10 min; the eyed and hatching rates were measured. UV irradiation as low dose as 5s, significantly decreased the hatching rate (P 0.05). So, based on the results of this study, it was impossible to detect any PR mechanism in Caspian salmon.

Ionocyte Immunolocalization and the Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation on Their Abundance and Distribution in the Alenins of Caspian Sea Salmon, Salmo trutta caspius

OBJECTIVE On a global scale, stratospheric ozone depletion has caused an increase in UV-B radiation reaching the earth's surface. Ultraviolet radiation has long been suspected to be harmful to aquatic organisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS In order to study ionocyte localization (by Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase immunolocalization) and the effects of UV radiation on the ionocytes of skin and gills, the alevins...

Cost factor analysis of Caspian salmon (Salmo trutta caspius Kessleri, 1877) fingerling production and release in Iran

Iran contributes to the stock enhancement of several economically valuable fish species, including the Caspian salmon, S. trutta caspius, by producing and releasing millions of fingerlings into the sea. This work was conducted to determine the production costs of the Caspian salmon fingerlings in the years 2002 and 2003. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared and filled in by an expert ...

The effect of probiotic Bactocell (Pediococcus acidilactici) and iron on growth in Caspian Sea Salmon (Salmo trutta caspius)

In the present study the effect of Probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici (Bactocell) and Iron was examined on growth performance in Caspian Sea Brown trout (Salmo trutta caspius) fry. 2430 fish with primary weight 3.59 g were divided in 9 experimental groups each include 90 fish, with 3 replications and studied for 60 days. Fish in control group was feed using commercial food (Skretting, Co.)  And...

in vitro effects of steroid hormones on inducing gvbd in caspian salmon (salmo trutta caspius) oocytes

this study was inducted to elucidate the effect of different steroid hormones on simultaneous maturation of oocytes in caspian salmon. oocytes were incubated with 1, 10, 100 and 1000 ng/ml of testosterone, progesterone and 17 β stradiol, in vitro, for 40 hrs. gvbd was considered as hormones effectiveness. 17β estradiol was effective just in 1000 ng/ml and testosterone had no positive effect on ...

Mixed milt fertilization of endangered Caspian brown trout Salmo trutta caspius influences effective population size of breeders

The maintenance of the endangered Caspian brown trout Salmo trutta caspius populations in Iran depends on its artificial breeding. There is no information on how current hatchery breeding protocol influences effective population size of breeders (Ne), which is a critical parameter to maintain genetic diversity in future generations. The current hatchery protocol (CHP) was comparatively evaluate...
