Abstract:

Hydrogen peroxide is an important mild oxidant which is widely used in various applications including remediation of waste waters and drinking water resources. The safe level of H2O2 residue has to be controlled through accurate and precise measurement methods. A facile spectrophotometric method for the determination of hydrogen peroxide is based on the reaction of iodine solution with toluidine blue (TB). To increase the applicability, accuracy and sensitivity of the method, direct reactions of hydrogen peroxide and iodine solution with TB, methylene blue (MeB), methyl blue (MB) and a diazo derivative of 1,3-diamino benzene (MADA) were studied. Based on the results of this study, the method was modified using MB instead of TB. The reasons concerned single peak visible spectrum, higher extinction coefficient, linear spectrophotometric responses at three different wavelengths during its oxidation by iodine and stability at low pH(s) and higher temperatures.

Determination of absolute hydrogen peroxide concentration by spectrophotometric method

There is considerable current interest in oxidative stress applicable to humans. One important reactive oxygen species generated in the body is H2O2. It was reported that substantial amount of H2O2 was excreted in urine, even in neonates. Therefore, it was hypothesized earlier that measurement of H2O2, especially in urine, could be a valuable biomarker for the generation of H2O2 and the degree ...

A Modified Fluorimetric Method for Determination of Hydrogen Peroxide Using Homovanillic Acid Oxidation Principle

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) level in biological samples is used as an important index in various studies. Quantification of H2O2 level in tissue fractions in presence of H2O2 metabolizing enzymes may always provide an incorrect result. A modification is proposed for the spectrofluorimetric determination of H2O2 in homovanillic acid (HVA) oxidation method. The modification was included to precipita...

Kinetic Spectrophotometric Method for Determination of S032- Using Methylen blue

The present work reports a kinetic spectrophotometric method for the determination of traceamounts of sulphite that is based on inhibitory effect of sulphite on the oxidation of Methyleneblue (MB) in acidic media. The reaction is followed spectrophotometrically by monitoring thedecrease in absorbance of MB at 664 nm with a fixed time of 0.5-4.5 minutes. It was found thatsulphite exert a strong ...

Derivative Spectrophotometric Method for Determination of Losartan in Pharmaceutical Formulations

Losartan, a highly effective blood pressure lowering agent, has been widely used for the treatment of hypertension. A fast and reliable method for the determination of losartan was highly desirable to support formulation screening and quality control. A first derivative UV spectroscopic method was developed for determination of losartan in the tablet dosage form. The first derivative spectrum r...

A spectrophotometric method for measuring the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide by catalase.

Several methods have been developed for following the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by catalase, but these either have not been sufficiently quantitative or have not proved rapid enough to yield reliable data during the critical 1st or 2nd minute of the reaction. Chemical procedures in which residual peroxide is titrated with permanganate (l-3) or an excess of permanganate is measure...
