Solvation Force in Hard Ellipsoid Molecular Liquids with Rod-Sphere and Rod- Surface Interactions

Authors

Abstract:

In previous work, one of us calculated the Solvation force of hard ellipsoid fluid with hard Gaussian overlap potential using hard needle wall interaction and non-linear equation proposed by Grimson- Rickyazen. In present work, using density functional theory and extended restricted orientation model, the solvation force of hard ellipsoid fluid in presence of more realistic rod- sphere and rod- surface interactions are calculated. We investigate weak and strong molecule-surface coupling strengths. The colloids distance effects on density profiles are calculated. We could not find the exact or simulation results for comparison. The results in the case are compared with the Solvation force of hard Gaussian overlap fluid and hard needle- wall interaction. The results are corresponded, qualitatively.

Hard Ellipsoid Rod-plate Mixtures: Onsager Theory and Computer Simulations

The liquid crystal phase transitions for a classical uid mixture of hard ellip-soids with aspect ratios 10 : 1 and 1 : 10, and equal volume, has been studied at two compositions using Onsager theories and by computer simulation. The original Onsager form of the Helmholtz free energy contains the second virial coeecient, but the eeect of higher virial coeecients may be taken into account indirec...

Orientational and phase-coexistence behaviour of hard rod-sphere mixtures

Results are presented from Monte Carlo simulations of bulk mixtures of Hard Gaussian Overlap particles with an aspect ratio of 3:1 and hard spheres with diameters equal to the breadths of the rods. For sphere number-concentrations of 50% and lower, compression of the isotropic fluid results in formation of a homogeneous (i.e. compositionally mixed) nematic phase. The volume fraction of this iso...

Self-poisoning of crystal nuclei in hard-rod liquids.

We report a Monte Carlo study of the pathway for crystal nucleation in a fluid of hard, colloidal rods. In the earliest stages of nucleation, a lamellar crystallite forms. Subsequent thickening of this lamella is hampered by the fact that the top and bottom surfaces of this crystallite are preferentially covered by rods that align parallel to the surface. As a consequence, subsequent growth of ...

The role of attractive interactions in rod-sphere mixtures.

We present a computer simulation study of binary mixtures of prolate Gay-Berne particles and Lennard-Jones spheres. Results are presented for three such rod-sphere systems which differ from each other only in the interaction between unlike particles. Both the mixing-demixing behavior and the transitions between the isotropic and any liquid crystalline phases are studied for each system, as a fu...

Inelastic Takahashi hard-rod gas.

We study a one-dimensional fluid of hard rods interacting with each other via binary inelastic collisions and a short-ranged square-well potential. Upon tuning the depth and the sign of the well, we investigate the interplay between dissipation and cohesive or repulsive forces. Molecular-dynamics simulations of the cooling regime indicate that the presence of this simple interparticle interacti...

Demixing in a hard rod-plate mixture

We argue that the possibility to observe a stable biaxial nematic phase in a binary mixture of prolate and oblate hard particles is seriously limited by the existence of entropydriven demixing. This result follows from a simple Onsager-type density functional theory. An important feature15 the coupling of the demixing mechanism to the orientational order of the system. The strength of this coup...
