significance of working memory in the academic achievement

Authors

Abstract:

The effectiveness and significance of working memory in the academic achievement and efficacy of students is indisputable. In memory studies, the working Memory Model (Baddeley, 2000) is a multivariate one with an emphasis on short and long term memory with a computational view. This recent view has made memory a more significant in academic performance, because it has an unbreakable link with the learning of important three aspects (reading, writing, and mathematics). working memory naturally has limitations such as space, time and efforts. This paper first dealt with historical studies with memory studies. Then, a multivariate working memory model was proposed, and its significance and role in academic achievement is investigated. Finally, in relation with natural limitations of working memory, some strategies appropriate with curriculum (content, teaching methods, and assessment methods) were presented.

The Developmental Influence of Primary Memory Capacity on Working Memory and Academic Achievement

In this study, we investigate the development of primary memory capacity among children. Children between the ages of 5 and 8 completed 3 novel tasks (split span, interleaved lists, and a modified free-recall task) that measured primary memory by estimating the number of items in the focus of attention that could be spontaneously recalled in serial order. These tasks were calibrated against tra...

A pilot study of working memory and academic achievement in college students with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE To investigate working memory (WM), academic achievement, and their relationship in university students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD Participants were university students with previously confirmed diagnoses of ADHD (n = 16) and normal control (NC) students (n = 30). Participants completed 3 auditory-verbal WM measures, 2 visual-spatial WM measures, an...

Motor coordination, working memory, and academic achievement in a normative adolescent sample: testing a mediation model.

The aim of the present study was to examine whether the relationship between motor coordination and academic achievement is mediated by working memory (WM) in a normative adolescent sample. Participants included 93 adolescents aged 12-16. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 provided three indicators of motor coordination (Manual Dexterity, Aiming and Catching, and Balance), the WM In...

Low Working Memory rather than ADHD Symptoms Predicts Poor Academic Achievement in School-Aged Children.

This study examined whether working memory (WM), inattentive symptoms, and/or hyperactive/impulsive symptoms significantly contributed to academic, behavioral, and global functioning in 8-year-old children. One-hundred-sixty 8-year-old children (75.6% male), who were originally recruited as preschoolers, completed subtests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition, Integr...

Poorer verbal working memory for a second language selectively impacts academic achievement in university medical students

Working memory (WM) is often poorer for a second language (L2). In low noise conditions, people listening to a language other than their first language (L1) may have similar auditory perception skills for that L2 as native listeners, but do worse in high noise conditions, and this has been attributed to the poorer WM for L2. Given that WM is critical for academic success in children and young a...
