Abstract:

In this paper, shear localization due to strain softening in sidepressed cylinders, is inverstigated. Shear localization causes formation of macroscopic shear bands which can be obsserved in the metallographic cross-section. In this paper, for the first time a method is presented in which a simple two-slice model is used to study the formation of shear bands. The results obtained form this model are in perfect agreement with the results obtatained form experimental works for and micrcrostructures in Ti-6242Si alloy. &#10Keywords: shear Localiation, shear Bands, Two –Slice Model, Titanium Alloy Ti-6242Si&#10

Shear strain localization in elastodynamic rupture simulations

We study strain localization as an enhanced velocity weakening mechanism on earthquake faults. Fault friction is modeled using Shear Transformation Zone (STZ) Theory, a microscopic physical model for non-affine rearrangements in granular fault gouge. STZ Theory is implemented in spring slider and dynamic rupture models of faults. We compare dynamic shear localization to deformation that is unif...

Shear Strain Localization in Plastic Deformations

Shear instabilities in the form of shear bands are often observed during high speed, plastic deformations of metals. According to one theory, their formation is attributed to eeective strain-softening response, which results, at high strain rates, as the net outcome of the innuence of thermal softening on the, normally, strain-hardening response of metals. In order to test the core instability ...

Analysis of strain localization in strain-softening hyperelastic materials, using assumed stress hybrid elements

Newly developed assumed stress finite elements, based on a mixed variational principle which includes unsymmetric stress, rotation (drilling degrees of freedom), pressure, and displacement as variables, are presented. The elements are capable of handling geometrically nonlinear as well as materially nonlinear two dimensional problems, with and without volume constraints. As an application of th...

Stick-slip instabilities and shear strain localization in amorphous materials.

We study the impact of strain localization on the stability of frictional slipping in dense amorphous materials. We model the material using shear transformation zone (STZ) theory, a continuum approximation for plastic deformation in amorphous solids. In the STZ model, the internal state is quantified by an effective disorder temperature, and the effective temperature dynamics capture the spont...

Localization and Shear Bands in High Strain-rate Plasticity

This article is devoted to the explanation of the onset of localization and the formation of shear bands in high strain-rate plasticity of metals. We employ the Arrhenius constitutive model and show Hadamard instability for the linearized problem. For the nonlinear model, using an asymptotic procedure motivated by the theory of relaxation and the Chapman-Enskog expansion, we derive an effective...
