Measuring Cytokinin Levels in the Root Tip by the Zeptomole.

Perseverance, a competitive spirit, and luck helped Folke Skoog and colleagues isolate and characterize the first cytokinin (CK) from degraded herring sperm DNA samples some 60 years ago (described in Amasino, 2005). Since then, much has been learned about this vital class of phytohormones, which have both local and long-distance effects on multiple processes throughout the plant. CKs interact ...

Polynomial Minimum Root Separation

The minimum root separation of an arbitrary polynomial P is defined as the minimum of the distances between distinct (real or complex) roots of P. Some asymptotically good lower bounds for the root separation of P are given, where P may have multiple zeros. There are applications in the analysis of complexity of algorithms and in the theory of algebraic and transcendental numbers.

Root Separation for Trinomials

We give a separation bound for the complex roots of a trinomial f ∈ Z[X ]. The logarithm of the inverse of our separation bound is polynomial in the size of the sparse encoding of f ; in particular, it is polynomial in log(deg f). It is known that no such bound is possible for 4-nomials (polynomials with 4 monomials). For trinomials, the classical results (which are based on the degree of f rat...

Influence of the root tip and the duration of washing on k retention by excised apical root segments of corn.

Excised apical segments of corn root (Zea mays) (5-15 mm from the root cap), some with and some without the root tips (0-5 mm) attached, were washed for varying time periods up to 4 hours in 0.5 mm CaSO(4). After washing, tips were removed from those segments washed with tips attached, and then all segments and tips were analyzed for K(+) content. The root tips (0-5 mm) initially contained abou...

Separation and mapping of chromosomes of parasitic protozoa.

Many protozoan parasites represent an important group of human pathogens. Pulsed Field Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis has been an important tool for fundamental genetic studies of parasites like Trypanosoma, Leishmania, Giardia or the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. We present PFGE conditions allowing a high resolution separation of chromosomes ranging from 500 to 40...
