Abstract:

In this paper, a stochastic term is added to the classical generalized nonlinear Schrödinger Equation to describe the noise generated when light pulses propagate in a fiber. It has been shown that the generated supercontinuum light source fluctuates up to 50% of its output temporal intensity profile due to noises of different sources. The simulation method devised has been applied to the propagation of finite energy Airy pulse in a photonic crystal fiber and to study the generated noise.

Modulation instability of finite energy Airy pulse in optical fiber.

We have investigated and analyzed the modulation instability (MI) of finite energy Airy pulse (FEAP) in an optical fiber in order to reveal the impact of truncation coefficient on the nonlinear propagation dynamics of FEAP with or without amplitude perturbation. We have also characterized the difference between the propagation process of smooth FEAP and that of modulated FEAP. It is shown that,...

Accelerating finite energy Airy beams.

We investigate the acceleration dynamics of quasi-diffraction-free Airy beams in both one- and two-dimensional configurations. We show that this class of finite energy waves can retain their intensity features over several diffraction lengths. The possibility of other physical realizations involving spatiotemporal Airy wave packets is also considered.

Polychromatic nonlinear surface modes generated by supercontinuum light.

We study propagation of polychromatic light near the edge of a nonlinear waveguide array. We describe simultaneous spatial and spectral beam reshaping associated with power and wavelength-dependent tunneling between the waveguides. We present experimental verifications of the effects predicted theoretically including the first observation of supercontinuum nonlinear surface modes.

Incomplete Airy beams: finite energy from a sharp spectral cutoff.

We present a mathematical analysis of the finite-energy Airy beam with a sharply truncated spectrum, which can be generated by a uniformly illuminated, finite-sized spatial light modulator, or windowed cubic phase mask. The resulting "incomplete Airy beam" is tractable mathematically, and differs from an infinite-energy Airy beam by an additional oscillating modulation and the decay of its frin...

Broadband noise on supercontinuum generated in microstructure fiber

The broad supercontinuum generated by pumping highly nonlinear microstructure fiber with a femtosecond laser exhibits broadband amplitude noise. We experimentally investigate this amplitude noise as a function of wavelength, input pump power, and chirp. OCIS codes: 190.4370, 190.7110
