Semantic processing survey of spoken and written words in adolescents with cerebral palsy: Evidence from PALPA word-picture matching test

author

Abstract:

Objective: The present study aimed to assess and compare semantic processing of spoken and written words in adolescents with cerebral palsy and healthy adolescents. Method: The present study is quantitative in terms of type and experimental in terms of method. Examination Group consisted 30 adolescents with cerebral palsy aged 10 to 15 years were selected by convenience sampling method. All of them were spastic. For control group, 30 healthy adolescents were selected according to gender, age and education of adolescents with cerebral palsy. To assess the subjects’ vocabulary abilities, spoken and written word-picture matching tests (47) and (48) were used. Results: The results showed that adolescents with cerebral palsy’ abilities in semantic processing of spoken and written words are significantly weaker than healthy adolescents. Furthermore, the developing spoken and written word patterns in adolescents with cerebral palsy delayed compared to healthy adolescents. Conclusion: Data analysis revealed that vocabulary network and perceptual impairment are the cause of weak semantic processing of spoken and written words in adolescents with cerebral palsy. However, their perceptual impairment is far greater.

Word learning and the cerebral hemispheres: from serial to parallel processing of written words.

Reading familiar words differs from reading unfamiliar non-words in two ways. First, word reading is faster and more accurate than reading of unfamiliar non-words. Second, effects of letter length are reduced for words, particularly when they are presented in the right visual field in familiar formats. Two experiments are reported in which right-handed participants read aloud non-words presente...

The activation of embedded words in spoken word identification is robust but constrained: evidence from the picture-word interference paradigm.

Three picture-word interference (PWI) experiments assessed the extent to which embedded subset words are activated during the identification of spoken superset words (e.g., bone in trombone). Participants named aloud pictures (e.g., brain) while spoken distractors were presented. In the critical condition, superset distractors contained a semantically related embedded word (e.g., charm, which c...

Effect of Child Factors on Parental Attitude towards Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy in Iran

Objectives: To determine the role of child factors in the prediction of parental attitudes towards children and adolescents with CP in Iran. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. One hundred fifty-two children and adolescents with CP aged 7-17 years (mean = 10.93, SD = 3.46) with a mother aged at least 25 years were selected using systematic random sampling. The Mother-Child Relati...

Integrated Phonological Processing in Bilinguals: Evidence from Spoken Word Recognition

The role of cross-linguistic phonological overlap in native and non-native word recognition was examined using an auditory lexical decision task. The degree of phonological overlap across languages was manipulated. Cross-linguistic overlap facilitated word recognition in the non-native language, but inhibited word recognition in the native language. The observed facilitation and inhibition effe...

Predictors of Interest in Performing Activities Among Iranian Adolescents With Cerebral Palsy

Objectives: Generally, adolescents who are interested in performing activities experience positive emotions and report high levels of well-being. However, adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) encounter various issues affecting their interests. The present research was planned to investigate the predictor factors that affect the interest in performing activities in Iranian adolescents with CP. ...
