Abstract:

In this paper we consider a single machine system that produces items part of which are defective. The defective items produced in a time period, consisting of several equal cycles, are accumulated and are all reworked in the last cycle of this period called the rework cycle. At the end of the rework cycle the whole process will start all over again. The first significant objective of this study is that, for the ease of production and resource planning, the rework cycle has to have the same length as the other cycles. The other objective is that the number of rework cycles be as small as possible, because of changeover costs needed for going from normal production to rework as well as special attention required for rework to satisfy the zero defect criterion. For this system, assuming no shortages are permitted we drive the total system cost per unit time and obtain the economic batch quantity which minimizes this total cost.

Optimal Batch Production for a Single Machine System with Accumulated Defectives and Random Rate of Rework

In this paper we consider an imperfect production system which produces good and defective items and assume that defective items can be reworked. Due to the nature of rework process we do not restrict the rework rate to be equal to normal production rate or constant and assume that it is a random variable with an arbitrary distribution function. We also assume as it is true in most real world s...

Modeling Rework Cycle: Comparing Alternative Formulations

Rework cycle is at the heart of modeling projects, one of the major application areas of system dynamics. In this paper we introduce a new formulation for rework cycle in which multiple defects may exist in a task. We compare the performance of this model with three other formulations, two adopted from system dynamics literature and one agent-based formulation. This comparative study illustrate...

Bottlenecks in Production Lines with Rework: A Systems Approach

The bottleneck (BN) of a production system is a machine with the strongest effect on the system’s throughput. In this paper, a method for BN identification in serial lines with rework and Bernoulli machines is developed. In addition, the paper provides two system-theoretic results: First, it demonstrates that BNs may be shifting not only because of changes in machine and buffer parameters but a...

A Markov Chain Model of Serial Production Systems with Rework

In this paper, we present a Markovian modeling framework that can describe any serial production system with rework. Under this framework, each production stage is represented by a state in the Markov chain. Absorbing states indicate the events of scrapping a product at a production stage or the completion of the finished product. Generalizable formulae for the final absorption probabilities ar...
