Abstract:

State estimation is the foundation of any control and decision making in power networks. The first requirement for a secure network is a precise and safe state estimator in order to make decisions based on accurate knowledge of the network status. This paper introduces a new estimator which is able to detect bad data with few calculations without need for repetitions and estimation residual calculation. The estimator is equipped with a filter formed in different times according to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of measurement data. In addition, the proposed estimator employs the dynamic relationships of the system and the prediction property of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to estimate the states of network fast and precisely. Therefore, it makes real-time monitoring of the power network possible. The proposed dynamic model also enables the estimator to estimate the states of a large scale system online. Results of state estimation of the proposed algorithm for an IEEE 9 bus system shows that even with the presence of bad data, the estimator provides a valid and precise estimation of system states and tracks the network with appropriate speed.

On Line Electric Power Systems State Estimation Using Kalman Filtering (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper principles of extended Kalman filtering theory is developed and applied to simulated on-line electric power systems state estimation in order to trace the operating condition changes through the redundant and noisy measurements. Test results on IEEE 14 - bus test system are included. Three case systems are tried; through the comparing of their results, it is concluded that the pro...

Phasor Measurement Unit Based on Robust Dynamic State Estimation in Power Systems Using M-Estimators

This paper introduces the uses of Robust Dynamic State Estimation (RDSE) with Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU), The M-Estimators Quadratic Linear (QL) and Square Root (SR) Estimators have been used. For the solution of the M-estimators problem, Iteratively Re-weighted Least Squares Estimation (IRLS) method is applied. In this work, we used the Decoupled Current Measurement (DCM) method to include ...

Harmonics Estimation in Power Systems using a Fast Hybrid Algorithm

In this paper a novel hybrid algorithm for harmonics estimation in power systems is proposed. The estimation of the harmonic components is a nonlinear problem due to the nonlinearity of phase of sinusoids in distorted waveforms. Most researchers implemented nonlinear methods to extract the harmonic parameters. However, nonlinear methods for amplitude estimation increase time of convergence. Hen...

Fault Type Estimation in Power Systems

This paper presents a novel approach for fault type estimation in power systems. The Fault type estimation is the first step to estimate instantaneous voltage, voltage sag magnitude and duration in a three-phase system at fault duration. The approach is based on time-domain state estimation where redundant measurements are available. The current based model allows a linear mapping between the m...
