Abstract:

Purpose: Rib anomalies include numerical and structural categories. This study investigates the costal abnormalities by computed tomography scan in an Iranian population. Methods: In a retrospective study, 400 Chest CT scans (225 (56.2%) male, and 175 (43.8%) female) aging from 18 to 89 were investigated for one year (2020 to 2021). Images were carefully observed and various abnormalities such as cervical ribs, elongated C7 transverse processes, bridging ribs, and bifid ribs are reported. Results: Among 400 chest CT scans investigated for this study, 375 (93.7%) cases were normal and 25 (6.3%) cases were abnormal. Fourteen (8% of all the female patients) and eleven (4.9% of all the male patients) participants of abnormal cases were female, and male, respectively. Among abnormal cases, four cases of bilateral cervical ribs (total prevalence (TP)=1%), four cases of bilateral elongated C7 transverse process (TP=1%), four cases of bridging first and second ribs on the left side (TP=1%), twelve cases of bifid ribs on the left (TP=3%), and one uncommon male case were reported. Conclusion: Being aware of the common abnormalities of rib cage is helpful in differentiating the diagnosis and seeking for possible other accompanied diseases such as thoracic outlet or Gorlin syndrome. In this study, twenty five cases of abnormal rib morphology were reported.

Uncommon primary tumors of the orbit diagnosed by computed tomography-guided core needle biopsy: report of two cases

Computed tomography-guided percutaneous biopsy is a safe and effective alternative method for evaluating selected intra-orbital lesions where the preoperative diagnosis is important for the therapeutic planning. The authors describe two cases of patients with uncommon primary orbital tumors whose diagnosis was obtained by means of computed tomography-guided core needle biopsy, with emphasis on ...

The Prevalence of Unanticipated Hamate Hook Abnormalities in Computed Tomography Scans: A Retrospective Study

Background:It is possible that some hamate hook fractures are not diagnosed or treated, thereby affecting the study of their natural history. Study of the prevalence of incidental hamate hook fractures, nonunions, and other abnormalities on computed tomography (CT) ordered for another reason could document a subset of undiagnosed and untreated hamate hook fractures which might change our under...

Recognition of a rare intrathoracic rib with computed tomography: a case report

One of the uncommon congenital variations is intrathoracic rib which a normal, a bifid, or an accessory rib lies within the thoracic cavity that is founded accidentally. Clinically, in most cases they are without symptoms; however, it may cause intrathoracic problems therefore it is important for radiologists and physicians to identify to prevent of excessive intervention and treatment during i...

Computed Tomography Imaging Diagnosis of the Left Rib Chondromyxoid Fibroma: a case report

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare benign bone tumor. The etiology of chondromyxoid fibroma is still unknown. We report a case of a 26-year-old male who suffered from chronic cough for a year. His chest radiograph showed a lobulated tumor over the left seventh rib. The computed tomography (CT) examinat ion further revealed an osteolytic tumor arising from the left seventh rib with calcified matrix...

Bilocular Stafne Bone Defect above And Below the Inferior Alveolar Canal Assessed by Cone Beam Computed Tomography: A Case Report

Stafne bone defect is a bone depression containing salivary gland or fatty soft tissue on the lingual surface of the mandible. The most common location is within the submandibular gland fossa and often close to the inferior border of the mandible. This defect is asymptomatic and generally discovered only incidentally during radiographic examination of the area. Stafne bone defect appears as a w...
