Reversal of Degenerative Changes in Cervical Spine Following Bipolar Release in a Neglected Case of Congenital Muscular Torticollis

Authors

Abstract:

Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a common cause of torticollis in children. Despite the ease in diagnosis in management, rare cases may be neglected and untreated which may not only impose cosmetic problems for the individual, but also affects the cervical spine with accelerated degeneration. Most patients with CMT can be managed non-surgically with medical and physical therapies, and surgery is indicated in a small portion while non-surgical attempts are unsuccessful. Here in, we are reporting a 16-year-old female with neglected CMT, and neck pain secondary to severe degenerative changes. We believe that neglected and untreated CMT cases may present with accelerated spine degeneration and surgical intervention should be considered promptly to reverse this process. Surgical intervention not only produces good cosmetic results but also reverses the degeneration process and protects the patient from disabling deformities, later in life.

The status of the cervical spine in preschool children with a history of congenital muscular torticollis

Background: Infants with congenital muscular torticollis are born with an asymmetric range of motion and a muscular imbalance in the cervical spine, as a result of a shortening or excessive contraction of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Craniofacial Asymmetry in Adults With Neglected Congenital Muscular Torticollis

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the craniofacial asymmetry in adults with neglected congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) by quantitative assessment based on craniofacial three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT). METHODS Preoperative craniofacial asymmetry was measured by 3D-CT for 31 CMT subjects ≥18 years of age who visited a tertiary medical center and underwent 3D-CT between January 2009 and D...

Congenital muscular torticollis. A spectrum of disease.

Sternocleidomastoid muscle fibrosis has been recognized for centuries, but its pathogenesis and treatment remains controversial. Pseudotumor of infancy is a firm fibrous mass in the sternocleidomastoid muscle appearing at 2 to 3 weeks of age. Congenital muscular torticollis is less common and appears later in life. Pseudotumor and congenital muscular torticollis probably represent different man...
