Research Article: Modeling the trajectories of growth and reproduction in European Hake (Merluccius merluccius, L. 1758) from the Sea of Marmara, Turkey

Authors

Abstract:

The study evaluated to model the growth and reproduction aspects of the hake, Merluccius merluccius, in the Sea of Marmara. On-board sampling was conducted on the commercial beam trawl fishery from February 2016 to January 2017. For the growth trajectories, using monthly length frequency data set, different methods were employed to improve parameter optimization. The variation of reproductive intensity was modelled using Generalized Additive Models (GAMs). The growth was fast and parameterized as L∞=65.9 cm, K=0.16 year-1 according to the Electronic Length Frequency Analysis (ELEFAN) with genetic algorithm optimization approach. Seasonal variation in growth, fitted a seasonally oscillating VBGF (soVBGF), indicated intense seasonality. The onset of the positive phase of the growth oscillation was observed around October proofed by a high fish condition that the growth starts accelerate after the summer period. A high gonadosomatic index (GSI) was evident over most of the year except between May and July, captured also the time component in the GAM modeling. The total length and fish condition have the highest impact on the GSI among the modeling parameters evaluated while temperature has low partial effect. The length at the first sexual maturity for females and males was calculated at 26.5 and 22.0 cm, respectively, lower than that of the Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. It is believed that this study allows deeper and new conclusions for the management of hake stock in the Sea of Marmara and Mediterranean Basin.

Some characteristics of sperm motility in European hake (Merluccius merluccius, L., 1758)

The objective of this paper is to characterize some of the sperm motility parameters in European hake (Merluccius merluccius), which is considered to be a species with aquaculture potential. The total ATP, ADP and AMP concentrations were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography on hake sperm samples collected during the winter-early spring in the Bay of Biscay (France) (n = 22) a...

Protein denaturation in frozen stored hake (Merluccius merluccius L

Protein solubility of whole and minced muscle of hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) was evaluated at different temperatures of storage: -5°, -12° and -20°C. Proteins soluble in 1% NaCl did not show any change at any of the temperatures of storage, while the 5% NaCl-soluble proteins decreased significantly when whole hake was stored at -5° and 12°C (p < 0.01). A correlation was found between the de...

Tag and recapture of European hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) off the Northwest Iberian Peninsula: First results support fast growth hypothesis

In the first tagging experiment of European hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) conducted off the NW Iberian Peninsula to study hake growth in the wild we released 527 live tagged individuals. The survival rate after capture and tagging was 58%. Mortality during capture was positively correlated with depth of capture and negatively correlated with hake size. Fifteen months after tagging, seven indi...

PARAMETERS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS IN LIVER AND WHITE MUSCLE OF HAKE (Merluccius merluccius L

Fish are the most important organisms in the biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems. A number of pollutants may cause the oxidative stress in the organism of fish. The monitoring of parameters of oxidative stress in tissues of fish is a good biomarker in the assessment of the condition of environment. Catch of commercially important species of fish, hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) was carried out ...

Gill net selectivity for European hake Merluccius merluccius from southern Portugal: implications for fishery management

A study of European hake Merluccius merluccius gill net selectivity was undertaken off the Algarve (Southern Portugal), between 1999 and 2001. Four nominal mesh sizes (70, 80, 90 and 100 mm) were used in fishing trials and the ‘share each length class catch total’ (SELECT) method was used to fit gill net selectivity curves. Hake were caught in the same size range by all mesh sizes, between 17 a...
