Reinvolvement with Squamous Cell Carci-noma after 14 years of Cured Esophageal Cancer

Abstract:

Esophageal cancer is a lethal disease with poor survival rate. It is necessary to determine the extension, and the stage of the tumor to predict the outcome of patients. Of the two common pathologic types, squamous cell carcinoma is still the most common form, and adenocarcinoma is the leading one. Early diagnosis and radical treatment of esophageal cancer, regardless of tumor spreading, increases the curability and the survival time to five years. Herein a case of cured esophageal cancer with 14 years survival without recurrence is presented. He was operated to remove the esophageal tumor. This can presumably raise the question whether the origin of the tumor or its involvement has to be appreciated as recurrence or new independent one.Iran J Med Sci 2006; 31(4): 238-239. Keywords ● Esophagus ● cancer ● survival ● curability

TELOMERASEACTIVITYIN IRANIAN PATIENTS WITH ESOPHAGEAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Telomerase activation is one of the main pathways to immortalize cancer cells. In many kinds of cancer cells, this special reverse transcriptase stabilizes and elongates telomeres and prevents telomere erosion that naturally occurs in every cell division. Esophageal cancer is the fifth most frequent cause of cancer death worldwide, and is highly associated with alcohol, smoking, cultural ha...

Role of Brg1 in progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Objective(s): Epigenetic regulation of gene expression can be carried out through chromatin remodeling enzymes such as SWI/SNF. Brg1 also known as SMARCA4 is a catalytic subunit of SWI/SNF, which is necessary for MMPs expression. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are known as important player enzymes during tumor progression and metastasis. Aberrant epigenetic modification of chromatin should be...

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after liver transplantation.

The occurrence of an oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma following liver transplantation is very infrequent. Such an event has been related to a history of alcohol-induced cirrhosis, as in other squamous cell tumours of the oropharynx. We report the case of a 64-year-old male patient diagnosed as having oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma six years after having had a liver transplant due to alc...

Sign of Leser-Trélat Associated with Esophageal Squamous Cell Cancer

The sign of Leser-Trélat is a rare paraneoplastic phenomenon marked by accelerated onset of multiple seborrheic keratoses. The occurrence of the sign often points towards underlying visceral malignancies which in a majority are adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract. We report this case of a 65-year-old man who presented with sign of Leser-Trélat and was diagnosed with poorly differentia...

Prevalence of Nucleotide Alterations of EGFR Gene in Patients with Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Kerman

Background & Aims: Esophageal Cancer is the sixth fatal cancer in the world. Squamous and adenocarcinoma account for 95% of esophageal cancer. The expression of EGFR has a role in the pathophysiology of epidermal-based malignancies such as esophageal cancer. EGFR is also an important criterion in the evaluation of disease staging and prognosis. The aim of this study was to survey the prevalence...
