Rainwater harvesting: A gardening necessity in semi-arid regions

author

Abstract:

This research aims to introduce the water supply method required for pistachio orchards in semi-arid climatic regions using the rainwater harvesting technique. For this purpose, a rain catchment system with an area of 1000 m2 was constructed at the Tasuj Station site. Based on the mean annual rainfall of the region, runoff threshold, runoff coefficient for insulation surfaces and the area of the catchment system, water storage pool was designed and constructed with a nominal capacity of 280 m3. In addition, a geomembrane cover is used to insulate the surfaces of the rain catchment system and the water storage pool. To reduce agricultural water consumption and increase productivity, the drip irrigation method with gravel filters was used to irrigate pistachio trees from harvested rainwater. The results showed that from the total rainfall of 267 mm, about 227 m3 of water was harvested from rainfall in the year 2021. According to the findings, the per capita water consumption of each fruitful pistachio tree has decreased from 8.65 m3 in the usual drip method to one m3 in the drip irrigation method with gravel filters; without having a negative effect on production yield. The simultaneous use of rainwater harvesting techniques and drip irrigation methods along with gravel filters will reduce the pressure of groundwater resources exploitation and increase the irrigation water efficiency. The results of this research were introduced to the farmers of the region in the form of educational-promotional workshops, which have been well accepted.

A Methodology to Assess and Evaluate Rainwater Harvesting Techniques in (Semi-) Arid Regions

Arid and semi-arid regions around the world face water scarcity problems due to lack of precipitation and unpredictable rainfall patterns. For thousands of years, rainwater harvesting (RWH) techniques have been applied to cope with water scarcity. Researchers have used many different methodologies for determining suitable sites and techniques for RWH. However, limited attention has been given t...

Evaluation of water supply for olive trees through rainwater harvesting in semi-arid regions in Kohgiloyeh va Boyerahmad Province

Abstract Lack of stored soil moisture is an essential factor in intensification of the problems of arid and semi-arid areas in Kohgiloyeh va Boyerahmad Province. In these areas, limited surface water and groundwater have rendered vast areas of the region’s fertile lands useless. Despite these problems, appropriate conditions can be provided to plant resistant and adapted species such as olive...

The Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran

Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...

Trend analysis and detection of precipitation fluctuations in arid and semi-arid regions

The most important impacts of climate change relate to temperature and precipitation. Precipitation is particularly important, because changes in precipitation patterns may lead to floods or droughts in different areas. Also, precipitation is a major factor in agriculture and in recent years interest has increased in learning about precipitation variability for periods of months to annual and s...

Long Lead Flood Simulation Using Downscaled GCM Data in Arid and Semi-arid Regions: A Case Study

Flood is one of the most calamitous natural disasters that causes extensive property and life damages across theworld. It however, could be a blessing due to its special natural water resources recharging value. By simulating themagnitude of probable floods considering the anthropogenic and natural effects and implementing contingency plans, their damages could be reduced. In this paper, the Gen...
