Abstract:

Introduction: Despite growing interest in the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the external radiotherapy design process (RT), Computer Tomography (CT) remains a gold standard and is regarded as a basic imaging modality in radiotherapy. MRI shows the high contrast in soft tissues without any radiation exposure to patients. As a result, MRI is used in functional tissue structures with registration on the CT images. Unfortunately, this causes systematic errors during the registration of MRI and CT images. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of removing the CT simulator images and replacing it with pseudo-CT images (which created by MRI images) for the electron density calculation in radiotherapy treatment planning.   Materials and Methods: The pseudo-CT images were generated for 10 randomly chosen patients with brain disease. Data consisted of image voxels chosen within the segmented area of the brain in both MRI and CT images. The relation between MRI intensity and electron density was derived from HU converted model by fuzzy look up table algorithm.   Results: It was found that the MRI intensity value is related to the HU value within different parts such as skull bone, sinus, and brain. The mean prediction errors of the conversion model are -0.53, -0.082, 0.0145HU in brain, skull and air regions respectively. The mean absolute errors are 19.40 , 50.53,1.22 Conclusion: The proposed method enables generation of pseudo-CT data for the different segmented part of the brain from MRI series with appropriate mean prediction errors.

New Pseudo-CT Generation Approach from Magnetic Resonance Imaging using a Local Texture Descriptor

Background: One of the challenges of PET/MRI combined systems is to derive an attenuation map to correct the PET image. For that, the pseudo-CT image could be used to correct the attenuation. Until now, most existing scientific researches construct this pseudo-CT image using the registration techniques. However, these techniques suffer from the local minima of the non-rigid deformation energy f...

Fuzzy logic based look-up table regulator

In this paper, a look-up table control strategy derived from a fuzzy logic controller is developed for output regulation of a SISO linear plant with delay subject to load changes and transfer between different operating points. The strategy considers an off-line trained look-up table for rejection of an unity load step change and another one trained for unity reference step tracking combined in...

Look-Up-Table based Halftoning Algorithm

Screening is a low complexity halftoning algorithm that has been widely used in many applications. However, screen design requires that the stacking property be obeyed. This constraint limits the texture quality at each gray level. We present a look-up-table based halftoning algorithm for which the stacking constraint is not necessarily satisfied; but the binary patterns for individual levels a...

Look up Table Based Low Power Analog Circuit Testing

In this paper, a method of low power analog testing is proposed. In spite of having Oscillation Based Built in Self-Test methodology (OBIST), a look up table based (LUT) low power testing approach has been proposed to find out the faulty circuit and also to sort out the particular fault location in the circuit. In this paper an operational amplifier, which is the basic building block in the ana...
