Proposals for a Failure Criterion Applicable to Discontinuous Rocks

Abstract:

The existing failure criteria to evaluate discontinuous rocks are predominatly based on the relations between principal stresses at failure. None of the criteria has a direct reference to the magnitude of deformation as a major parameter in rock Several reasons are identified indicating that the selection of peak stress as a major parameter, which is obtained through the evaluation of a failure criterion, is not reliable. On the other hand, the experimental investigations indicate that the state of strain is equally important to the state of stress. The proposed failure criterion is to describe the behavior of a jointed rock mass under various loading conditions taking the major principal strain into consideration.

New empirical failure criterion for shale

A new failure criterion was presented to predict the ultimate strength of shale under the triaxial and polyaxial state of stress. A database containing 93 datasets was obtained from the results of the uniaxial, triaxial, polyaxial compressive tests, an indirect tensile test was collected from reliable references, and this test was carried out on the shale samples taken from the southwestern oil...

A widely applicable Bayesian information criterion

A statistical model or a learning machine is called regular if the map taking a parameter to a probability distribution is one-to-one and if its Fisher information matrix is always positive definite. If otherwise, it is called singular. In regular statistical models, the Bayes free energy, which is defined by the minus logarithm of Bayes marginal likelihood, can be asymptotically approximated b...

The qSOFA requires validation as a promptly applicable clinical criterion

Along with the new conceptual definition for sepsis, the quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) score was proposed as a simple clinical criterion to potentially assist clinicians in identifying patients with suspected infection who are likely to have a prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay or die in the hospital, which can be identified immediately at the bedside. The qSOFA can be...

A New Criterion for Screening Medical Applicants

Introduction. In the current screening system, new admissions are based on general intelligence as measured by universities entrance examination. Considering the fact that an important function of medical graduates is to educate the patients how to restore and take care of their health, communicative competence and skills would be, at least, as important as general intelligence. To show that la...

Generalized energy failure criterion

Discovering a generalized criterion that can predict the mechanical failure of various different structural materials is one of ultimate goals for scientists in both material and mechanics communities. Since the first study on the failure criterion of materials by Galileo, about three centuries have passed. Now we eventually find the "generalized energy criterion", as presented here, which appe...
