Abstract:

Characterizing comorbidity in dialysis patients: principles of measurement and applications in risk adjustment and patient care.

Comorbid conditions are highly prevalent in dialysis patients and are significant predictors of mortality and other adverse outcomes. Accordingly, it is important to account for differences in comorbid illness burden among groups of dialysis patients being compared. At present, there is no consensus on what conditions matter, how each should be defined, and what weights each carries when defini...

Patient ratings of dialysis care with peritoneal dialysis vs hemodialysis.

CONTEXT In light of conflicting evidence of differential effects of dialysis modality on survival, patient experience becomes a more important consideration in choosing between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. OBJECTIVE To compare patient satisfaction with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in a cohort of patients who have recently begun dialysis. DESIGN AND SETTING Cross-sectional s...

4 Principles of Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is a technique whereby infusion of dialysis solution into the peritoneal cavity is followed by a variable dwell time and subsequent drainage. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is a continuous treatment consisting of four to five 2-L dialysis exchanges per day (Fig. 4-1A). Diurnal exchanges last 4 to 6 hours, and the nocturnal exchange remains in the peritoneal...

Impact of peritoneal dialysis technology on patient care.

Technologic advances in peritoneal dialysis (PD) have a significant impact on patient care. Here, we review recent technology with special emphasis on connectology, equipment, PD solutions, new modalities, patient management programs, and pharmaceuticals proposed for membrane preservation. Some of these advances and practices are in their early experimental stages (for example, continuous-flow ...

Mineral and bone metabolism in dialysis: towards unified patient care?

Since the mid-1990s, a tremendous effort has been made to improve the mineral and bone metabolism abnormalities in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In addition to the technological advances in dialysis, (high performance, larger and more biocompatible membranes, and water quality), as well as frequency and duration, many drugs were also launched in a very short span (Figure 1). Inter...

Proposed tenets of osteopathic medicine and principles for patient care.

New & Noteworthy The philosophic and scientific basis of osteopathic medicine was established by Andrew Taylor Still in the late 19th century. In 1922, the first profession-wide attempt at codifying the osteopathic philosophy into simple phrases or precepts was made by Louisa Burns, DO, as the dean of the A.T. Still Research Institute, along with representatives from each of the osteopathic med...
