Primary Repair of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament: A Review of Recent Literature (2016-2017)
author
Abstract:
Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using tendon or ligament autograft is the current goldstandard surgical technique for acute ACL ruptures. However, ACL repair surgical procedures are reappearing as anoptimistic treatment alternative for acute proximal ruptures. The purpose of this annotation is to review the current roleof primary repair of the ACL.Methods: A Cochrane Library and PubMed (MEDLINE) search related to the role of ACL repair in acute ACL rupturewas analyzed. Results: Arthroscopic ACL repair can accomplish good short-run outcomes with knee stability and resumption of sportactivity in children, with proximal ACL avulsion tear. Reported results of open primary repair in adult patients with proximaltears are excellent, which ratifies there may be a possible role for primary repair as management for proximal ACL tears. Conclusion: Recent reports suggest that refixation of the ACL is a possible treatment alternative in selected patients.Only time will tell whether the long-run results are similar to those obtained following ACL reconstruction.Level of evidence: III

Primary Repair of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament: A Systematic Review.
PURPOSE To describe the clinical and preclinical research conducted on primary repair of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the past 10 years. METHODS A systematic search of PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase was performed for all English-language studies published between 2003 and April 2014 on primary repair of the ACL. RESULTS Twenty-six studi...
full textPrimary Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair With Augmentation
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are usually managed by reconstruction with autograft or allograft, but primary repair in carefully selected patients is a reasonable option. Proximal avulsions presenting early with excellent tissue quality are amenable to repair and healing. Restoration of native ACL preserves its proprioceptive and kinematic functions. A repair is less invasive and avoid...
full textThe anterior cruciate ligament: a review of recent concepts.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) consists of a small anteromedial band and a larger posterolateral band. Recent findings have shown the ACL to play a major role in the function of the knee joint. The ACL prevents anterior luxation of the tibia, limits tibial rotation, and resists valgus and varus stress to the knee. The most common mechanism of ACL injury involves hyperextension of the knee...
full textFemoral Condyle Fracture during Revision of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Case Report and a Review of Literature
Background: A rare and devastating complication following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) revision reconstruction is femoral fracture. Case presentation: A 35-year old male soccer player with a history of ACL tear from the previous year ago, who underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction and functioned well until another similar injury caused ACL re-rupture. Revision of ACL reconstruction w...
full textThe Effectiveness of Preoperative Exercises on the Outcomes After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Systematic Review
Objective: Quadriceps weakness is common after Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and subsequent surgery. Preoperative defects affect postoperative outcomes. The purpose of this review study was to investigate whether preoperative exercises can affect the postoperative outcomes after ACL reconstruction. Methods: The searching for papers was conducted in the PubMed database among the studi...
full textFailure of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
The present review classifies and describes the multifactorial causes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery failure, concentrating on preventing and resolving such situations. The article particularly focuses on those causes that require ACL revision due to recurrent instability, without neglecting those that affect function or produce persistent pain. Although primary ACL reconstructio...
