PRIMARY DIFFUSE LYMPHOMATOUS POLYPOSIS OF THE GASTROINT ESTINAL TRACT
Authors
Abstract:
A rare case of diffuse lymphomatous polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract is reported in which the patient presented with abdominal pain, weight loss and bloody diarrhea. X-rays revealed multiple polyps involving the stomach, small intestine and colon. Biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of lymphomatous polyposis. The duration of symptoms and signs was 3 months. Diffuse lymphomatous polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract is a distinct entity, separated from diffuse gastrointestinal lymphoma or Mediterranean-type lymphoma

We report two rare cases of multiple lymphomatous polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract. Both patients had multiple polypoidal defects involving large segments of gastrointestinal tract. The histopathology in both cases was diffuse poorly differentiated lymphoma. One case had multiple relapses despite treatment and died after 58 months. The second patient died following induction chemotherapy.

The gastrointestinal tract is the predominant site of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Multiple lynphomatous polyposis is a type of appearance of mantle cell lymphoma. It is characterized by multiple polypoid lesions involving long gastrointestinal tracts and it accounts for only approximately 1-2% of non-Hodgkin lymphomas. A 78 years old patient was admitted to our Department of General Surge...

We describe two cases of multiple lymphomatous polyposis in the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum. Clinical findings, histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings in paraffin embedded tissue are discussed. It is important to recognize this rare form of gastrointestinal lymphoma because of the prognostic and therapeutic implications.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the most common extranodal site affected by lymphoma, accounting for 5–20% of all cases.1 The incidence and location of primary GI lymphoma varies around the world. Overall, the most commonly involved sites are the stomach followed by the small bowel and ileocecal region.2 Concerning histological subtypes, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma is more com...
