Abstract:

Abstract:   The use of Concrete beams reinforced with a combination of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and steel bars has increased dramatically in recent years, due to improvement in strength and flexural ductility simultaneously. In this paper, we proposed a new equation for estimating the effective moment of inertia of hybrid FRP-steel reinforced concrete (RC) beams on the basis of the genetic algorithm and experimental results. The genetic algorithm is used to optimize the percent error between experimental and analytical responses. In the proposed equation, additional coefficients are considered in order to take into account the specific properties of FRP bars. The effects of the elastic modulus of FRP and steel bars, the hybrid reinforcement ratio, Af /As, and the different level of loading on the effective moment of inertia has been considered. These coefficients are used to modify Branson’s equation to compute the effective moment of inertia of concrete beams reinforced by FRP and steel bars. Comparison between the experimental and predicted results showed the adequacy of the model used in predicting the effective moment of inertia, and deflection of hybrid – RC beams.

effective moment of inertia of frp reinforced concrete beams

concrete beams reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (gfrp) bars exhibit large deflections and crack widths as compared with steel reinforced concrete beams due to the low modulus of elasticity of gfrp bars. different studies show that aci 318 equation for the effective moment of inertia ie does not predict deflection well for frp reinforced concrete beams. the purpose of this paper is...

An Equation for the Effective Moment of Inertia for Frp-reinforced Concrete Beams

The deflection of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP bars is higher than those which are reinforced with steel bars. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new equation for estimating the effective moment of inertia in FRP-reinforced concrete beams. This will be accomplished by using experimental results and the genetic algorithm approach. Genetic algorithm is used for optimizing the error ...

FRP Repair of Corrosion-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Beams

Corrosion of steel reinforcement is one of the main durability problems facing reinforced concrete infrastructures worldwide. This paper will summarize the results of a multi-phase experimental program undertaken at the University of Waterloo to investigate the viability of using externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates to rehabilitate corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete bea...
