Potentials of Solar Energy Use in Upstream Petroleum Industry

Authors

Abstract:

Extraction and processing of oil products consume 10% of the total energy produced by fossil resource. to prevent operational problems in downstream units Oil extracted from oil fields will be sent to the desalting plant for desalination and dehydration. One of the most important steps that have a vital role in this unit is pre-heating by heaters which use natural gas produced with crude oil at the same time.   Iran is known as the area with the potential for utilization of solar systems. Investigations on  Solar thermal technologies showed that Linear Fresnel concentrator has high performance as a  solar auxiliary system for conventional heaters And leads to an annual reduction of 1.5 million cubic meters of natural gas consumption in a desalination plant. The Gas is saved can be used for feed of petrochemical plants. Investigation on the cost-benefit payback time of proposed system shows that solar Fresnel designed according to the conditions and potential of solar radiation at the site of the study is a little more than a year. Such an investment is economically justified and reduces fuel consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the combustion gas. A 27% share of solar power in the supply of the thermal energy required for crude oil desalination is a step towards achieving the goals of sustainable development in the upstream oil industries.

How to use Big Data technologies to optimize operations in Upstream Petroleum Industry

Big Data is the oil of the new economy” is the most famous citation during the three last years. It has even been adopted by the World Economic Forum in 2011. In fact, Big Data is like crude! It’s valuable, but if unrefined it cannot be used. It must be broken down, analyzed for it to have value. But what about Big Data generated by the Petroleum Industry and particularly its upstream segment? ...

Energy Efficiency Improvement in the Petroleum Refining Industry

Information has proven to be an important barrier in industrial energy efficiency improvement. Voluntary government programs aim to assist industry to improve energy efficiency by supplying information on opportunities. ENERGY STAR supports the development of strong strategic corporate energy management programs, by providing energy management information tools and strategies. This paper summa...

Biological monitoring of benzene exposure for process operators during ordinary activity in the upstream petroleum industry.

This study characterized the exposure of crude oil process operators to benzene and related aromatics during ordinary activity and investigated whether the operators take up benzene at this level of exposure. We performed the study on a fixed, integrated oil and gas production facility on Norway's continental shelf. The study population included 12 operators and 9 referents. We measured persona...

Possibilities and challenges for biosurfactants use in petroleum industry.

Biosurfactants are a group of microbial molecules identified by their unique capabilities to interact with hydrocarbons. Emulsification and de-emulsification, dispersion, foaming, wetting and coating are some of the numerous surface activities that biosurfactants can achieve when applied within systems such as immiscible liquid/liquid (e.g., oil/water), solid/ liquid (e.g., rock/oil and rock/wa...
