Potentially Toxic Elements Contamination in Sediment, Surface and Pore water of Maharlu Saline Lake, South - West Iran
Authors
Abstract:
Maharlu Lake, located in the SW of Iran, has acted as a sink for various wastewater discharges in the last few decades. This study aimed at assessing potentially toxic elements (PTEs) distribution in sediment, surface and pore water samples of Maharlu Lake. To achieve that, the samples were collected from each compartment and the total concentration of PTEs (Al, Fe, Sc, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Mn, V, Cd, and Mo) analyzed by inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Based on enrichment factor (EF) analysis the lake sediments were categorized as: minimally enriched with Sb, Co, Zn, V, Cu, Pb, As, Mn, Fe, Al and moderately enriched with Mo, Ni, Cr, and Cd. Analysis of contamination factor (Cf) and potential ecological risk factor (Er) of PTEs in sediment samples showed that there was low to moderate level of contamination. The sediment-water partition coefficients (Kd for PTEs in both water groups decreased in the order of Fe> Al>Mn>Zn>Pb>Mo>Sb>Cd. The low value of Kd (log Kd

Evaluation of stream sediment contamination by potentially toxic elements around mining and farming areas (SE Nigeria)
In this work, the concentrations of the potentially toxic elements in stream sediments in SE Nigeria were assessed for pollution monitoring in mining, quarrying, and farming areas. The levels of iron, molybdenum, vanadium, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese, chromium, barium, and beryllium were determined. The concentrations of the elements were in the order of Fe > Ba > Mn > Cr > Zn...
full textassessment of heavy metal contamination in water and surface sediments of the maharlu saline lake, sw iran
maharlu saline lake is located in the sw of iran. to assess the environmental pollution of thelake, the total concentrations of as, cr, co, cu, cd, pb, zn, ni, fe, and mn were determined in the surfacesediments and water of the lake. as and cr were not detected in the water samples, however, the meanconcentrations of other dissolved metals in maharlu lake water were 0.28 mg/l for cu, 0.28 μg/l ...
full textStudy of contamination, sources and health risk of potentially toxic elements in dusts of Tehran’s elementary schools
Concerns about dust contamination with potentially toxic elements are especially important in environments such as schools (particularly elementary schools) because children are more vulnerable to contaminants than adults. Therefore, due to the diversity of air pollution sources in Tehran, the present study was conducted to determine the severity of pollution, origin and health risk assessment ...
full textSeasonal variations in pore water and sediment geochemistry of littoral lake sediments (Asylum Lake, MI, USA)
BACKGROUND Seasonal changes in pore water and sediment redox geochemistry have been observed in many near-surface sediments. Such changes have the potential to strongly influence trace metal distribution and thus create seasonal fluctuations in metal mobility and bioavailability. RESULTS Seasonal trends in pore water and sediment geochemistry are assessed in the upper 50 cm of littoral kettle...
full textContamination Assessment and Zoning of Heavy Metals in Water and Sediment of Alagol Wetland, Iran 2017
Background and purpose: Heavy metal pollution is among the most serious environmental issues that is caused directly or indirectly through human activities or natural sources. Alagol wetland is one of the most important ecosystems in Iran which is affected by numerous agricultural and industrial development programs. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed in s...
full textMineralogical and ecological assessment of heavy metals in the surface sediment of Maharlou Lake, Shiraz, Iran
Maharlou Lake, as the largest water body neighboring to the metropolis of Shiraz, plays a significant role in adjusting the ecosystem of the region. The objective of this study was to evaluate mineralogy and heavy metals enrichment in the surface sediments of the Maharlou Lake. The result showed a decreasing trend of heavy metals concentrations in studied region surface sediments as follows: Sr...
