Pnm-9: Association between Air Pollution and Reproductive System Functions
Authors
Abstract:
Background The highly sensitive period of preimplantation development represents that embryo is very vulnerable to exogenous agents. Many of the developmental abnormalities may arise from the inevitable maternal periconceptional exposures to toxic substances in the environment which may threaten reproductive capability and pregnancy outcomes. In this article, an overview of the association between air pollution and reproductive, fetal, and neonatal health outcomes is given. MaterialsAndMethods A literature search was conducted through PubMed to identify air pollution and fertility related studies. Results Regardless of the consideration of different types of study design, the statistical methods used and residual uncontrolled confounding variables, critical appraisal of reported studies reveals a causal relationship between environmental air pollution exposure and reproductive functions. Among the components of air pollution, particulate matter (PM) appears to be the most harmful to human health. PM include a range of tiny particles, including acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles. Particles come in a wide range of sizes in which smaller size fractions (PM

Association between Air Pollution and Hemoptysis
Background. The relationship between air pollution and exacerbation of respiratory diseases is well established. Nevertheless, its association with hemoptysis has been poorly investigated. This paper describes the relationship of air pollutants with severe hemoptysis. Methods. All consecutive subjects with severe hemoptysis during a 5-year period were included. The relationship between the cont...

In the November 2003 issue of EHP, Liu et al. (2003) concluded that " relatively low concentrations of gaseous air pollutants are associated with adverse effects on birth outcomes. " Although this may be true from a purely statistical sense, there appear to be limitations of this research that suggest cautious interpretation of the findings. Liu et al. (2003) evaluated individual-level birth ce...

Adverse health effects of ambient air pollution on mortality and morbidity in adults and children have been extensively studied across the world (Barnett et al. 2006; Bell et al. 2004; Dominici et al. 2003; Gold et al. 1999; Jerrett et al. 2005; Middleton et al. 2008; Pope 1999; Pope et al. 1991; Pope and Kanner 1993; Samoli et al. 2007; Wietlisbach et al. 1996). Considerable consistency across...
full textImpact of air pollution on reproductive health.
Airpollution may have an impact on adverse reproductive outcomes in bothfemales and males. It has long been known that air pollution can affect human health. Dockery et al. (1) and Schwartz (2) reported that increasing concentrations of pollutants are responsible for the significant increase of daily mortality. Respirable particulate matter is considered to be responsible for this increase. Thi...
