Phytochemical Screening and Anticancer activity of Ethanolic extracts of Selected Mangrove plants
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Mangrove ecosystems have been known to possess diverse secondary metabolites and a good number of bioactive compounds of pharmaceutical importance have been reported from the mangrove plants. They are biochemically unique, producing wide array of natural products with unique bioactivity. They possess active metabolites with some novel chemical structures which belong to diverse chemical classes. Objective: This study was undertaken to evaluate the phytochemical screening and cytotoxicity of four major mangrove plants (Excoecaria agallocha, Acrostichum aureum, Aegiceras corniculatum, Avicennia officinalis). Methods: For this purpose, at first phytochemical screening of the selected plants were observed. Then, the bioactivity as preliminary cytotoxic activity was performed using Brine Shrimp Lethality (BSL) bioassay where significant 50% Lethal Concentration (LC50) was exerted using polar solvent (ethanol) extract of different plant parts (leaf, bark and stem). Then, Resazurin Cell Viability Assay was performed only for ethanolic leaf and bark extracts of E. agallocha using four standard bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, and Staphylococcus aureus). Results: The experimental findings showed significantly strong LC50 by ethanolic leaf and bark extracts of E. agallocha and other plants like A. corniculatum, A. aureum, A. officinalis showed moderate and negligible cytotoxicity, respectively. Then, the experimental findings showed significantly strong IC50 by ethanolic bark extracts. Conclusion: The screens employed in this present study are preliminary and advanced assays are needed to verify and reveal further this bioactivity present in those plants, particularly E. agallocha.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anticancer activity of 10 selected traditional Chinese medicinal plants on 4 cancer cell lines, namely MCF-7 (breast carcinoma), BALL-1 (acute lymphoblastic leukemia), Huh-7 (hepatocellular carcinoma), HeLa (cervical carcinoma) and their cytotoxicity on a normal cell line, namely MCF-10A (non-tumorigenic mammary epithelial line), about which...
full textdetection of volatile compounds of medicinal plants with some nano-sorbents using modified or new methodologies and investigation of antioxidant activity of their methanolic extracts
in this work, a novel and fast method for direct analysis of volatile compounds (davc) of medicinal plants has been developed by holding a filament from different parts of a plant in the gc injection port. the extraction and analysis of volatile components of a small amount of plant were carried out in one-step without any sample preparation. after optimization of temperature, extraction time a...

full textPhytochemical screening by FTIR spectroscopic analysis of leaf extracts of selected Indian Medicinal plants
A large number of medicinal plants are used as alternate medicine for diseases of man and other animals since most of them are without side effects when compared with synthetic drugs. Identification of the chemical nature of phytochemical compounds present in the medicinal plants will provide some information on the different functional groups responsible for their medicinal properties. While s...

Objective: The objective of this study was to screen the phytochemical constituents of the seeds of the medicinal plant Hygrophilaauriculata and to obtain preliminary in vitro data about its anti-diabetic effects. Methods: First extracts in four solvents i.e. water, methanol, ethanol and chloroform were prepared by optimized maceration procedures. Determination of the phytochemical constituents...
