Abstract:

Background & Objective: Resistance patterns among nosocomial bacterial pathogens in hospitals may vary widely from country to country at any given point and within the same country over time. Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most important bacteria that cause hospital-acquired infections. Therefore, surveillance of the antibiotic resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii is necessary, especially in our country, where there is death of relevant data.   Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional-descriptive study was performed on 63 MDR isolates of acinetobacter baumannii isolated from patients in Fars province hospitals. After acinetobacter baumannii diagnosis with bacteriological standard tests , we determined their susceptibility to the following antibiotics via the antibiogram method (disk diffusion): cefoxitine polymixin B nalidixic acid meropenem tobramycin imipenem trimethoprim sulphametoxazole ampicilin-sulbactam azteronam rifampicin ceftazidim gentamycin cefotaxim piperacillin ciprofloxacin streptomycin amikacin and polymixin B. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC ( for imipenem and ciprofloxacin against acinetobacter baumannii isolates was determined using the serial dilution method according to the CLSI guideline.   Results: The percentage of acinetobacter baumannii isolates that were resistant to ciprofloxacin, imipenem, and meropenem in the serial dilution method was 77.7%, 40.9%, and 60%, respectively.   Conclusion: High antimicrobial resistance in acinetobacter baumannii species was observed in the present study therefore, it is necessary to implement some approaches for the prevention of bacterial spread.

Evaluation of growth inhibition activity of myxobacterial extracts against multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii

The worldwide dissemination of multi drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains has caused serious concern and high rate of mortality in recent decades that originate from limited effective antibiotics in the treatment of A. baumannii infections. Myxobacteria are Gram-negative bacteria that are important for their complex lifestyle and production of novel structurally secondary metabolites ...

Multi drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infection

Consultant Paediatric neurologist, King Fahad Military Hopsital, Jeddah21159, Saudi Arabia E-mail: [email protected]; Tel: 00966 535556205 Managing Acinetobacter baumannii infection is challenging during the treatment of infected ventriculoperitoneal shunt due to its propensity to develop multi drug resistance (MDR) to commonly used potent antibiotics in hospital settings. We present one such...

Extensively Drug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii

second patient were within the same subgroup, but similarity in nucleotide sequences was only 82.5%. This result suggests that this patient was infected with 2 different virus strains of HRV-A and a strain of HRV-C. Comparison of the HRV-A strains with the HRV-C strain showed that they belonged to different subgroups and had low similarity for nucleotide sequences. The second patient had 3 dist...

Synergistic effects of sulbactam in multi-drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii

Acinetobacter baumannii is a frequently isolated etiologic agent of nosocomial infections, especially in intensive care units. With the increase in multi-drug resistance of A. baumannii isolates, finding appropriate treatment alternatives for infections caused by these bacteria has become more difficult, and available alternate treatments include the use of older antibiotics such as colistin or...

ISOLATION OF LYTIC BACTERIOPHAGE AB72P AGAINST MULTI-DRUG RESISTANT ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII ISOLATES OBTAINED FROM BURN INFECTION

Background & Aims: Acinetobacter baumannii is a gram-negative pathogen that causes a wide range of hospital-acquired infections. Due to its intrinsic traits and its remarkable abilities to quickly acquire resistance genes, it has become resistant to most antimicrobial agents and a major problem for hospitals. In recent years, application of lytic bacteriophages has been considered to eradicate ...

Molecular Analysis and Expression of bap Gene in Biofilm-Forming Multi-Drug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii

Background: Acinetobacter baumannii is commonly resistant to nearly all antibiotics due to presence of antibiotic resistance genes and biofilm formation. In this study we determined the presence of certain antibiotic-resistance genes associated with biofilm production and the influence of low iron concentration on expression of the biofilm-associated protein gene (bap) in development of biofilm...
