Partial Association Components in Multi-way Contingency Tables and Their Statistiical Analysis

Authors

Abstract:

In analyses of contingency tables made up of categorical variables, the study of relationship between the variables is usually the major objective. So far, many association measures and association models have been used to measure  the association structure present in the table. Although the association measures merely determine the degree of strength of association between the study variables, the association models illustrate the details and components of association structure. These measure and models have found vast application in many disciplines. For more details see Goodman and Kruskal (1954, 1979), Leibetrau (1983), Goodman (1972, 1979, 1985, 1991) and Ghoreishi and Meshkani (2006, 2008). When one is interested in demonstrating the association components of two ordinal categorical variables while there is at least one explanatory categorical variable, it is natural to think of partial association between the two ordinal variables while the effect of the explanatory variable(s) are averaged out in some sense. We believe that this approach is the best way to incorporate both the extra information available in explanatory variable(s) into analysis and interpret the role and share of various polynomial trends. In this paper, we ... [To continue please click here]

Analysis of Two-way Contingency Tables

Pearson’s test and likelihood ratio test are two of the classical tests frequently used for testing the equality of r distributions using the data in the contingency tables. Presently we suggest an alternative test for testing the equality of distributions. It is found that the alternative test has, in general, more satisfactory levels of the acceptance probabilities under the null hypothesis, ...

The Strucplot Framework: Visualizing Multi-way Contingency Tables with vcd

This paper has been published in the Journal of Statistical Software (Meyer, Zeileis, and Hornik 2006) and describes the “strucplot” framework for the visualization of multiway contingency tables. Strucplot displays include hierarchical conditional plots such as mosaic, association, and sieve plots, and can be combined into more complex, specialized plots for visualizing conditional independenc...

Analysis of Contingency Tables Bayesian Analysis of Contingency Tables

The display of the data by means of contingency tables is used in different approaches to statistical inference, for example, to broach the test of homogeneity of independent multinomial distributions. We develop a Bayesian procedure to test simple null hypotheses versus bilateral alternatives in contingency tables. Given independent samples of two binomial distributions and taking a mixed prio...

Analysis of singly ordered two-way contingency tables

Pearson’s statistic is investigated for nominal-ordinal two-way contingency tables in which we wish to test for identical rows. The statistic is expressed as a sum, the first summand of which is a statistic given by Yates (1948), and examines location effects for the nominal category. The second and subsequent summands reflect the corresponding moments: for example, dispersion, skewness, kurtos...

Conditional and marginal association in contingency tables

Standard tools for the analysis of the (average) conditional association structure of the distribution on a multiway contingency table are log-linear models. A different association concept is that of marginal association and this paper describes how marginal log-linear parameters can be used to measure this aspect of association. The paper gives a non-technical discussion of these two aspects ...

Bayesian Methods for Two-way Contingency Tables

In this paper, we consider Bayesian estimation and model determination for two-way contingency tables. The analysis is based on partitioning the parameter space of a saturated log-linear model into parameter subspaces identiied by considering the natural symmetries of the data. Prior distributions may then be chosen to respect invariance restrictions required by the available prior information....
