Organotin Compounds and the Environment
Authors
Abstract:
Organotin compound that have at least one Sn-C bond have wide commercial applications as PVC stabilizer, antifouling agent in paint and as agrochemicals. The general formula for organotin compounds is R4SnX4 - n where R is normally alkyl or aryl groups and X=Cl-, OH-, CH3COO- . If n=3, the compound has the highest toxicity, for example Et3SnOAC has LD 50 4mg/Kg ( rats ) and this is the most toxic compound. Organotin compounds affect natural killer (NK) on lymphocytes in human. It is known NK lymphocyte is the primary immune defense mechanism against tumor and virtually infected the cell in human bodies. Organotin compounds pollute water and soil that can be transferred to human body through seafood. Despite the ongoing legislative restrictions for the use of Organotin compounds in Western Countries, environmental pollution of these compounds is still a big problem. Therefore the investigation on the analysis and the degradation of these compounds in water and sediments is important. In this paper, we present the challenges in the analysis and the degradation of Organotin compounds.

The extent of pollution with organotin compounds and Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Mn, V, Co and Al was investigated in sediments and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from the Slovenian costal area of the Northern Adriatic Sea. Sampling was performed in Marina Portoroz, Dockyard Izola, non exposed area of the Bay of Mesecev zaliv and in Mariculture Secovlje. Mussels were taken in the summer and wi...

According to Ross (1), there are three main areas in which organotin compounds have product and process utility: (1) heat stabilizers; (2) catalytic agents; (3) biocidal compounds. Organotin derivatives account for the fourth largest production of organometallics amounting to about 3-4 million pounds per year as compared with about 485 million pounds per year for organolead compounds. Originall...
full textEnvironmental behavior of organotin compounds in the coastal environment of Xiamen, China.
In 2006, organotins pollution were investigated in the coastal environment of Xiamen, China. Six species of organotin compounds including tributyltin, triphenyltin and their degradation compounds were quantified in the dissolved and particulate phases of the water, and in the sediment using GC-FPD. The concentrations of organotin compounds ranged from 2.2 to 160 ng (Sn) L(-1) dissolved in the w...

full textThe synthesis of some organotin (IV) compounds in the melt- phase
The melt-phase synthesis of dioctyltin (IV) and triphenyltin (IV) benzoates were carried outusing stoichiometric amounts of benzoic acids and the corresponding organotin (IV) compounds. The reagents were ground together in a mortar and fed into a boiling glass tube. A cannula tubewas inserted into the boiling tube to discharge accumulated gaseous products. A syringe ensureda continuous flow of d...
